Just out of curiosity I looked at some local dealer sites and noted a new Tacoma TRD OR is nearly the same price I paid for my loaded DC SR5 TRD OR. Seems crazy to me

How much are we talking? Where is this Tacoma in the spread/line up? I would agree it’s crazy…how does this happen you think?

Just like that, back to where we were when the segment started to die years ago where the price advantage over a half ton was so small people figured they might as well go with a full size.

The MSRP on a limited Taco vs Tundra is only in the 7k range. Larger rebates consume a chink of that. AutoT says in my area you can get the aforementioned limited Tundra for 3k more than a Taco. Which is a lot of metal for a little more

This happened to me back in 2005 when I was shopping for a new Tacoma to replace the Supercharged Tacoma TRD OR that I had recently lost. (Illegal driver T-boned me in an intersection). The dealer had nothing comparable in Tacoma's to offer but did have a sweet Tundra 4x4 XSP on the lot for not much more money. I've been driving Tundra's ever since. :)

Yeah, mid size truck prices are high enough now that a lot of people will opt for a half ton since they provide a lot more truck for not that much more money. Between us, I’ve long thought that the Ranger and the Gladiator truly just exist at their price points to get people on the lot and into an F150 and Ram 1500 respectively. It’s surprising to see Toyota go this direction, however, since they have dominated mid size sales for so long.

55 for a taco is craaaazy…I think the only way to afford decent cars in the future is to start a corporation and lease as a tax deduction

I was looking at the TRD Pro Taco version at $80k and it was just behind the TRD Pro Tundra was at $90k.

80K financed over 5 years at 7.19%! Yikes! That is about $92k plus 15% taxes. or buy a house!

Actually, my sister bought 2 houses in rural Sask for $11,000 each. There are some good deals outside on the major centers. Just need to adjust to the distance to starbucks or costco.

Ya, here we get a vacant lot for 1.3mil :)

Her family moved to Sask a few years ago and they got a 10 acres parcel with a house, workshop, barn and quonset for about $140 CDN. They have a hour drive to get to the closest major center so not too bad. But harsh winters on the prairies. They picked up these other 2 houses a few years and flipped one already!

When Toyota can sell more than twice as many Tacoma's over Tundra's the demand is there. So, why not up the price on them.

I was thinking of waiting for the 2024 Tacoma before I decided on my 2023 Tundra but when I heard they were goint with a 4 banger that really didn't sit too well with me. Just like the V6 in the Tundra didn't sit too well with people who wanted to see them keep the V8. I hope they cleaned out the machining debris out of those 4 bangers well although I hear the transmissions on the new Tacoma's are having issues. .

Looking at the prices from a popular broker is looks like aprox 10% off MSRP on Tacomas and 15% off MSRP on Tundras. I'm surprised discounts are already showing up on Tacomas.

All true but still, 10% off on a new Tacoma? $5K off on Land Cruisers. Aprox 9% off on Forerunners.
Aren't you a little surprised with that?

It looks like Sequoia's are MSRP only.

It looks like whoever buys Sequoias doesn't give a rip about the recall.

I am semi in market a new CUV for the wife There are a lot that are priced so the drive off with taxes is essentially MSRP. You pretty much have look at something made by Stellantis, Nissan or Lincoln if you want more off than that.

Toyota trucks seem to be the outlier where they are playing the big rebate game with the big 3.

I'm looking at sort of expensive used cars right now and have saved searches on Cars.com. Stuff is aging and I'm getting lots of price reductions. Nothing disastrous, just coming a little close to normal. Nothing is making me rush as I think the market continues to move the buyers direction. I'm hoping to sneak up on something that was purchased with what was then free money but now is costly. Basically, I'm looking for someone that reached too far.
I would think the same thing is going on with $90K Denalis whose owners don't really need a pick up.

2025 Camry for invoice, XSE model fully loaded in my immediate future as soon as it gets in. Fingers crossed dealer keeps his word. Market seems to be correcting but still at stupid high interest rates (5.25% /60 months). Of course, at least it's not 1989 when I paid 12.6% though, so there's that.

Glad that you were able to make the jumps without any real loss, that always makes it nice! I don't get how the dealer is making any money there, but that's their problem not yours or mine! Hope you enjoy this one.

The Tundra never competed in sales with the big three for work trucks.

But the Tacoma can bring in a major Tacoma tax and out sells all midsize competitors easily.

So Toyota went the true Japanese route and created a larger Tacoma+ (the new Tundra) their largest group of truck buyers, Tacoma owners, have something bigger to upgrade to when they have a family or need more room.

They can turn spike the Tacoma price even higher because 1.) people will still pay that much (which I agree is absolutely insane to pay 60k+ for a Taco), or 2.) people will say, eh, it’s only a few bucks more to get a Tundra, hence driving new Tundra sales up (because who in their right mind pays that for a Tacoma).

Japanese vehicle business strategy combined with American vehicle business strategy.

Good thing the 2015 Tacoma and the 2017 Tundra were the last years worth buying, eh? :)

    This is very logical.

Except the work truck thing. Why do people buy F150s and Silverados over a Tundra?

Imagine contributing money to the UAW lol

Configurations. Many fleets and contractors will only buy an HD 2500 single cab long bed for example. Just recently my lawn weed control, pest control and HVAC service all rolled up in that configuration. Most fleets are single brand so if they need any HDs they will buy the 1500s from that brand as well most likely

Some Ford and GM dealers have dedicated fleet sales and service facilities that can stock a business up with fleet vehicles regular dealers don't carry in volume. Plus heavily incentivized bed storage and rack system deals at purchase.

tundra is atrocious for payload and towing. At least historically. They are worthless to most as work vehicles.

With the indicators of the broader market in general, I am exactly 0% surprised. Look at Buffett’s cash pile. Things are about to go on sale. All signs point to the economy taking a massive beating. Automakers want as many people hooked into financing as possible before the real stuff hits the fan.
