Just picked up a 2010 Tundra SR5 Double cab, 5.7, with 114000 miles. So far….new tires, struts, front brakes(power stop Z36)and of course a modern Radio with a back up camera and all the car play features. I’m pretty stoked.
Now for my oil change…I would like to start using synthetic oil in this vehicle. Any downside to switching from regular to synthetic that I am not aware of?

If the truck has had 0W20 oil its whole life, it has never been run on conventional oil.

This is a MYTH, misconception, lie, or joke....... From the Mobil Oil website: "Synthetic oils typically provide better protection than conventional oils, but switching back and forth between full synthetic and conventional oil will not damage the engine."

Why can’t you switch back to conventional oil?

Welcome from LA (Lower Alabama)! Your question has already been answered, but to reiterate, it is not only an option to go full synthetic, it is much better for your engine.

Hey so in regards to oil change intreval. I run full synthetic. But the question I am asking myself is I have a newish to me 275k mile truck. I did an oil change. But now on the next oil change...should I go 10k or 5k? or should I for the first few do 5k and then go 10k? Also does timing on this matter? like ever 6 months etc?

BTW I do get a slight ticking on really cold mornings form the engine that goes away in around 30 sec or so. This ticking btw happens rarely. I also do live down south so only on freezing mornings I have this issue.

Should always just follow manufacturers recommendations. These trucks should of been on synthetic the whole time since its such a refined weight of 0W20, 5W20. I would suggest using the 0W20 unless your physical conditions or engine wear is telling you its time for 5W20. The general rule of thumb on the intervals to change is every 5k miles which is the recommended change time.
•If you do a lot of city driving, on/off cycles, fleet vehicle, idling or highway driving that is bumper to bumper slow speed stop and go traffic = 5k is you change interval
•If you do a lot of just highway driving non stopped for long miles at a time, with not a lot of on/off cycles or stop and go traffic = 8-10k miles change is okay but remember to be checking oil if it looks like it needs the change then do it sooner
•as for the 6 months change this really only applies if your not driving the vehicle long enough for it hit operating temperatures in short drives frequently. This can depending on the environment let the oil collect moisture that would normally burn off under normal driving conditions and operating temps.

as for switching from conventional to synthetic in a non synthetic built engine (old) it all comes down to health and mileage if its a high mileage engine with baked seals theres a good chance switching to synthetic will show you were every small leak is real fast.

as for switching from synthetic to conventional in a synthetic built engine it is not recommended as the shapes and refinery of the molecules differ and could cause poor oil flow or coverage in the tight tolerances in modern engines.

Donut media did a few episodes on oils and the differences.
