My buddy has a 2006 Double Cab with 4.7 v8. with 189K miles. He is on a road trip in Mammoth currently and has a noise coming from around the oil pan area. He said its not a coming from a pulley or the belt.

Some background, he had the Valve cover gaskets replaced at a reputable Toyota shop 7 days ago. Unsure if they performed an oil change after the gasket replacement.

He went to a local shop in Mammoth and they told him a pulley was loose and that a bolt was stripped. Charged him to rethread the hole for the bolt and sent him off. He said the noise went away for a few and came right back.

Can it be the oil pump going bad or clogged? Truck drives normal just making noise and no CEL

Oil pressure is sitting at the middle at idle. Videos attached

Second video is private. Spitting in the dark, but is it possible the noise is coming from a vacuum line that was left disconnected, or is cracked or damaged in some sort of way?

Sounds almost like a vacuum line is loose (like EVAP hose, under the hood, driver's side), or a pulley is failing or rubbing something.

Dumb question, but has he checked his oil level?

Can he shoot a video under the hood with the hood open, moving from the brake master cylinder, around the front, then over to the passenger side of firewall?

If they told him a bolt was striped and pulley loose the there are on 2 pullies on the front of the engine that can make that sound and that is the idler pulley or the pulley for the belt tensioner. And my guess judging by the sound and where you panned the camera is the idler pulley bearing is toast. But like they said get us a steady video of where the sound is coming from but sounds like a bearing on the pulley.

If the noise left and came back then it's probably an accessory drive component failure.

Leaning towards this. He can stop by harbor freight and pick up and automotive stethoscope. It might help him narrow it down.

Do the air injection pumps make any noise when they fail?

Pull the serpentine belt and see if the noise goes away?

From the sound of it seems the flywheel to torque converter is cracked and hitting the bell housing/ transmission access hole.

I've been driving mine a bit now and the air injection pump only comes on for cold starts. When the vehicle is warm no need for the pumps to operate.

Speculation is silly. Do the easiest thing first and pull the serpentine belt off. If it's in the accessory drive, the noise will go away.

That's just it doesn't make a sound that would come from accessories related. Ie anything bearing failure. It is a dull tapping noise coming from the lower oil pan. Nothing from the front near the accessory/drive belt. Just my 2 cents. Matter of fact that's what we're all doing here is speculating trying to help out with what we have to work with.

Don't see anything silly about it really

Glad they got it fixed. I've done about 4 of them and know the sound. Hate to do the job because it requires removal of the engine or transmission to fix.

Happy to help narrow it down for you.

Damn. I should've gotten that one. I've actually got it linked up in the Megathread, I'll hafta add yours there too.
    • Strange rattle noises at back of engine, like marbles rolling around: Several people here and at other forums have found this issue where they describe the sound as loose marbles banging around. Then found their flex plate was cracked in multiple places. Ticking timebomb. Check it out.
