Ok, I will try to keep this short. Took the Tundra in today for warranty work and annual inspection. Miles on the Odometer 11574. This also recorded on the Vehicle Emissions report. Note as well on 9/7 took in for excessive tire wear and alignment issues. Miles then at 9732 Miles.

Pick-up the car tonight and Odometer now at 9361? How did this happen?????
Checked several times and its showing 9361. Go to and check the Toyota app and it aligns with the miles at 9361. It also shows the 9/7 service at 9732 miles. Also have all service receipts.

So how did I lose 2213 miles? Now, my concern with the title and mileage records matching up vs. flagging potential issues. Big concern here....................

    Thoughts

Edit add: Toyota and dealership need to explain this. Now that I'm aware, I cannot trade or sell it or face legal action and any corrections destroy trade/resale value.

You are looking at one of the trip odometers?? Not the original mileage one

I would normally say "no need to worry" but after the Toyota dealership screwed up my mileage at the service department (not the same as literal mileage discrepancy on the truck), carfax flagged my truck as a discrepancy and tampered with. It was a PITA to get resolved when I was trying to sell my 2012 Tundra. Luckily my truck had been in the service department a few times recently and there was no way I could have physically added 30k miles to the truck.

I would definitely want some answers here. It actually takes some effort to change the mileage.

What tech level would be able to do that I wonder? Isn't that normally burnt into the ECM and vin locked?

I know the two ECMs I've had swapped out, the VIN/Mileage was entered and nothing could change it. These were on Jeep products. With the new digital age, anything is possible now.

On the 2007-2021 the mileage is stored in the instrument cluster in EEPROM and cannot be changed with Techstream - it requires connecting directly to the chip in the cluster (pulling the cluster out and then apart) with a reader and then flashing it with the new value that is stored in HEX format. I’ve done it (swapping out clusters and had to transfer the mileage to the new cluster).

Not sure how the Gen3 is set up, but I would expect it to require some greater level of control than a simple scan tool.

Interesting it wasn’t that difficult on some of the older BMWs, or so I’m told.

Is it possible that you are looking at the countdown odometer to the next service? When I cycle through the odometer settings there is actual mileage, two trip mileage readings and one for the number of miles to the next service.

Service advisor fat fingered the miles. Go to your dealership speak to the service director and he or she has to reach out to your regions arbitrator. Its all fixable and your carfax wont take the hit and then you will not have an issue if you ever sell the truck down the road

Yeah - a lot depends on the mfgr and how they set up the system. I was surprised the first time I discovered that it was stored in the instrument cluster only on my 2008.

but then back in the days of mechanical odometers, it was possible to get in there and fiddle with the dial.

I'm willing to bet that it's this. I have a few customers a month at our dealership that ask about this. One guy accused us of selling a used car to him because it had 9940 miles on it and he "just bought it yesterday". My sales guy hit the toggle switch and it showed the actual odometer of 60 miles.

When I first got in our truck to test drive I saw 9900 something and I was like why are you lying to me about this being a new truck? Then I realized it was the maintenance countdown.

Spoke with the dealership today. The customer service tech didn't have a clue, nor did he care. So stopped in for un-announced visit with the Service Manager and here is what happened.

The vehicle was serviced on 9/7 and under warranty-new Instrument cluster ordered. The front bezel was cracked requiring replacement with an entire new cluster. Normally, they keep the truck, order part and when arrives in a day or two install. At time its ordered, they provide mileage on car, and this is uploaded electronically to new cluster. This made sense as I found the new cluster without any of my settings in place.

Remember, noted two months for new cluster to arrive due to supply chain issues. Over this time, two road-trips and normal daily driving accounted for mileage difference.

There is a DOT Sticker tagged to the VIN placed on the B Pillar noting the change and accounting for any mile's difference. It becomes a permanent part of the car. That of course was missed by the Customer Service tech.

Once I roll up 2300 miles, the variance disappears and should be good to go.

Always cautious, I will retain my service record paperwork as back-up.
