Cover 2.jpg Took the truck in today to have the tonneau cover inspected and came out with the fix. They've added 2 new heavier brackets, 2 additional bolts (4 total) with washers, nuts and pins as well as large instructional decals (sorry didn't get a picture of this but will in the AM if anyone is interested. Took about 3 hours (1st repair dealer has done)...it's definitely not going anywhere.Cover 3.jpg

    Cover 1.jpg

Edit: They did not add 2 new brackets, used the original brackets.

That large flat washer on the left does not appear to be sitting flush with the tonneau bracket. Not that it's going to make much difference doubling up on attachments.

I took mine in yesterday to have it inspected. They had to order repair kit and going to schedule me for next week to have it installed.

Not a fan of the regular nuts though over star knobs, so probably going to be replacing those regular hex nuts for some knurled thumb nuts to make the tonneau cover removal tool free.

I won’t be having that done on mine. One of the big reasons I wanted that was the quick removal with the thumb screws that doesn’t involve any tools.

How often do you have to take it off? It flips all the way open to allow 95% of your bed to be used...

Sometimes you need that extra 5% when hauling stuff. For me when I have motorcycle in the bed. Need that front tire to be up against the bed to tie it down.

That's pretty half ass as far as I am concerned. Took them 9 months to figure that out. Do you know if it has a rubber seal? I already have enough water leaking into my bed, it does not need help.

    None yet but soon!
I called my dealer to make this same update/order parts for this correction/fix and they had NO IDEA what I was talking about... Of course this is the same dealer that fixed the tonneau cover issue by tightening my lock nuts when it first came out and marking it cleared/fixed against my truck!!! If anyone gets official remedy information from Toyota please post it here so our dealers can look it up correctly. Thanks!

The closet bolts to the cab, which are the original holes, on both sides leaks like a sieve. Going in today to talk to service manager.
First impressions comes off easy enough but putting it back on and getting it to tighten (bolt spins freely), more smaller parts to lose, not as clean a look, new mounting is sturdy and it's solid when it's up against the cab.

Dealership is ordering a new repair kit....if that doesn't work I'm going to ask for a new cover to be installed. Any water that gets near those front bolts goes directly into the bed. Here's part numbers for the repair. 20230907_163705.jpg

Yes all four elevator bolts have the rubber seals but the 2 original holes might as well not have any, water pours through it. I tried to tighten the bolts down further but it doesn't help. We'll see what happens with another repair kit.

I respectfully opted out of this resolution and requested a refund for the tonneau cover. After much hassle with the dealership and 2 conversations with Brand Engagement, refund is now being processed.

I ended up having them take care of it at the dealership. Such a terrible way to engineer, affix as they drilled for huge holes through the top of the cover and installed 4 bolts.
Before they touched it, I didn’t have any significant leaks now water just pours right through into the bed.

It's the 2 original holes that are leaking, cover is divited in and bolts/washers will not snug up. Dealership and Toyota replaced with new cover (pre-drilled) and hardware, no issues leaks.

Back ‘em off and add a tiny bead of black RTV above and below the rubber washer. They’ll never leak.

Yeah that’s not proper fix even if it did stop leaking. Bandaid fix if anything. I haven’t checked if mine leak yet (been out of the country last 3 weeks) but if it does leak it’s going to back to dealer. If they try this silicone fix, I’m going to take it back to them every time I remove and reinstall the tonneau cover to apply new silicone.

Had a chance today to check to see if the fix was leaking. It was leaking bad from the original hole.
Went into my dealer after work to make appointment cause their phones was down and showed the service advisor the video of it leaking. The service manager was there and saw the video too, he said the tonneau cover isn’t completely waterproof and they haven’t had anyone else that had the issue. Told them it wasn't leaking before the recall fix and that multiple people on forum had this same issue. Mentioned that other dealers was replacing the entire Tonneau covers per Toyota. They made me an appointment 2 weeks from now to have it looked at.

The video I showed them of it leaking from the bolt hole, both side like this:

Had a bad experience at the dealer today regarding my tonneau recall. It wouldn't have been bad except the person who seemed knowledgeable and scheduled my service told me one thing, and the jerk service manager told me something different.

In the end I came home with my tonneau uninstalled and in the bed of my truck, and then reinstalled it myself without the Toyota "fix".

In looking at this solution, it'll be easier to go down to the hardware store and buy 20 bucks worth of parts to affect the fix on my own.

First real bad experience in eight Toyota purchases. I almost thought I'd re-bought my nightmare GMC that put me into a Toyota in the first place 22 years ago.

Oh, and finally got my second key today after 9 months.

I like this truck, but my recent experiences put me into the group that buys used, tested vehicles.

Took my truck in last week for the Tonneau cover leaking at the elevator bolt. Dealer said this was acceptable condition and added sealant to help in stop the leak. Contacted Toyota Brand Engagement and was told that a case manager contacted the dealership service manager today. Toyota is standing by the dealership and saying that the dealership followed the instruction given to them by Toyota and it matches the acceptable condition. Case manager said they can't do anymore unless they have more cases but haven't heard of any complaints of leaking after recall. Basically case manager said unless the dealer ask for warranty they won't fix it.

It's your dealership. Mine leaked, tech who did the fix contacted whoever at Toyota and they replaced everything.

I’ll have to switch to different dealer for service. This dealer doesn’t seem to want to help me with anything when it comes to warranty. It was just convenient cause I work next door to them so I can drop my truck off before heading to work.

Sorry you're having problems...I know of at least 3 that went into my dealership because of the leaking from the original holes and they replaced everything and no questions asked.

Whatever you do, DO NOT get Toyota to install the tonneau recall!!! Like many others, mine is now leaking BADLY. Unfortunately (and as I suspected I would be told) the dealer has told me that they installed the cover per Toyota’s instructions and there is nothing wrong with it. They further stated that tonneau covers are expected to leak and are weather resistant but not weatherproof. In the year and a half that I owned this truck prior to this fix I had minimal - and I mean you could barely see any moisture - in the bed. Furthermore it would take a massive storm to even get the slightest bit of water in. Now, where they drilled the holes, water just pours in.

I called Toyota. They were useless. I made a complaint and received a complaint number. By making a complaint the dealer told me that they could caulk the hole but that wasn’t an official sanctioned repair by Toyota. They would do this for “good customer service”. I told them no thank you and I only want authorized Toyota work done on my truck.

I called Toyota back and elevated the complaint to the senior customer service representatives. This representative called the dealer and then told me that the dealer is offering a caulk job. I asked if I got that done and for some reason the tonneau had to come off, go for a warranty repair, etc. would Toyota cover it since it was caulked. After a long pause I was told “no” and caulking is at my own risk.

Fortunately in Maryland we have a Lemon Law process. I’m sure that it will be a headache but something has to be done. Water getting into the cover will mildew the foam in the tonneau and may cause rust.

I am EXTREMELY disappointed in Toyota. I have driven Toyota’s exclusively since 1997. After this experience I am afraid it may be my last.

Has anyone been told the tonneau cover recall impacts other tonneau covers? I called to get my second key fob and the person in the service dept told me it impacts all covers, not just the OEM one. I am calling BS and looking at the fix there's no freaking way that this could impact a retrax but thought I would see if others have heard this.
