So I’m somewhat surprised and confused about a recent conversation at the dealer. So I had the local dealer change my oil . I stated that I wanted oem Toyota 0-20. I asked if that is what they use and they stated yes bulk oil. When I paid up at guest service I noticed the statement read Mobil 0-20. I asked why they used Mobil 1 and not Toyota. The response I got was that 0-20 Mobil is top of the line and essentially the same thing. I was irritated because I asked for oem Toyota oil I’m at a Toyota dealer why would they use use something other that oem.
So this has me wondering about all other fluids transmission powersteer etc. does anyone work at a dealer and know if they use real oem Toyota 0-20 as their bulk oil? Also other fluids too

Don't know for sure, but been told Mobil makes the factory oil. And that it's basically Mobil 1

FCF11A0D-1430-4DD8-B115-9DBFEABB75C2.jpg Its the additive pack in oem that I want.
Mobil 1 0-20 doesn’t have it.look at the difference. Like I said if I’m at the dealer why not just use what Toyota recommends in the first place. BB014F8E-DF15-4757-8FEA-83162A6CF473.jpg

This is why I’m learning to do things myself. You flat out asked what specifically they used. I don’t care if Mobil 1 is similar or the same or completely different. I would pay the premium to have what fluid I specifically asked for put into my truck. To me, the guy either lied to you, or said kick rocks, I’ll put whatever I want in it because I don’t care and it’s not my truck. How can they misunderstand what you want when you laid it out clear as day. If you don’t use a specific fluid, fine. At least have the decency to tell me. I just don’t like people anymore...

    Rant over.

I know your not going to like this answer but..... dealers use bulk oil from a local venders because it’s cheaper. If you want OEM oil buy 8 bottles from parts counter and do it yourself, otherwise you probably getting bulk oils.

I don't need to work at a dealer to know this answer. Business is business...I regret to inform you that dealers use whatever meets Toyota's minimum requirement and is cheapest to buy. The cheaper the oil/fluid, the more money they will make on an oil change, differential service, brake service, etc.

Red Line oil is also reported to be very high in the additives that the Mama Toyota factory oil has.

Yeah I’ve found it for 5.50 a qt. I do it every 6 months so not to big of a deal. Just pisses me off that you have to buy the oil and do it yourself if not you won’t get real oem oil sold at the dealer. I spoke with someone a couple of days that stated that the bulk oil comes in 55 gallon drums hence the name bulk but he could not say with certainty if it was genuine oem o-20 or a substitute. He was going to inquire and get back after the holidays. I figured someone here would know

Our dealer uses Mobil bulk except for the quick line lanes which have 0-20 Toyota fluid. Transmission fluid is oem ws, the type 4 transmissions get valvoline max life. Gear oil is not Toyota, power steering fluid is not Toyota. Brake fluid is not Toyota.

this is how most dealers around here are.

Toyota does not make oil. All manufacturers get oil and other fluids from other sources such as Mobil or Shell.

90% sure Toyota uses Mobil for their oil. Back in the day it was some
    Japanese company. But no more.

I hear you I’m sure Mobil 1 makes it but Toyota requires an additive packet put in

Most of the time manufacturers put out a bid for there oil specs.
Whoever meets that spec at the right price gets the bid. Same with the tires that come stock on trucks and cars.
We buy in bulk oils some 55 gallons Drums some come in bulk in a tanker truck that gets pumped into our tanks (hundreds of gallons) The more that is bought the cheaper it is.

I work for a very large freight company. One of my regular customers is an Oil Distributor. Every time I take a shipment of from Mobil 1 Lubricants part of the shipment is boxed “Toyota” while the rest is Mobil. According to the warehouse workers and managers it is in fact made by Mobil 1. It could have some slightly different ingredients but the base oil is exactly the same as Mobil 1. I would not lose any sleep over them putting Mobil 1 in your truck. It’s high quality.

As a freight driver I see countless factories that do nothing but place different labels on the same product.

TGMO is the same base stock as Mobil Super full synthetic, with a Toyota specific additive mix. It's currently made by ExxonMobil. They do sell it by the quart.

Most OEM oil is sourced from generally available retail products, so the Toyota stuff is particularly interesting in that regard.

If you want your oil to come out of a Toyota bottle and not a 55 gallon drum in the shop why don't you just go to the parts counter and buy 8 quarts of Toyota OEM oil, walk it over to the service department, and say put this in my truck when you do the oil change?

Unless you want to do your own oil changes. Shop around or go online and find a good deal for Toyota OEM oil. I use Redline 0W20 which has a superior additive package to even the the Toyota oil. Albeit, more expensive but I care enough to pay for it. It Meets or exceeds API specs.

A guy at works buys his own oil and filter and takes it to the shop that does his alignments and stuff and they change it for a flat labor cost. Might be an option if you have a good shop you trust.

You do you but I use Mobil 1 and sleep well.
A slight trace of this or that isn’t even close to something for me to worry about.

As for dealers, NO, just NO on maintenance.

    I agree with that statement!!

Let a dealer change my oil once because they gave me a "free oil change". Tech put too much oil in the engine and I had to get under car and drain some when I got it home. Called the manager and ranted ... he basically didn't care. Last time they get my business. OP, you are much better off doing your own maintenance (if you are able). That way you will KNOW it is done correctly.

Yes I’m at that point. Toyota oem 0-20 oil is 5.50-7.50 per qt. amsoil 0-20 is 9.00 retail. I do every six months or 5k miles
I know I can leave it much longer but I’m stuck in old ways.
