I can’t remember and haven’t been able to find the information anywhere. What’s the capacity of engine oil for my truck?
Not sure if it was 7 or 9

    I have a 2019 5.7, and the listed capacity is 8.5 quarts.

    Page 512.

I believe you can find the owner's manual online on Toyota's website, in PDF format? I'm pretty sure that's where I got mine.

Any idea why Toyota went from 7.9 to 8.5 in 2018?

    Nope.

But my 2107 with the 5.7 engine ALWAYS takes 8.6 to get to the top line on the stick.

Good to know. I’ll have to check mine as I just changed it and did 8 quarts. I too have a 2017.

Try to remember the top line of the dipstick is a "Hot" reading. Please when you fill after a change try to go to 1/2-3/4 on the stick.

Where is it written that this is a hot reading? Never heard that before. I call BS here for the first time in 2023. :)

    Function before sparkle.
The manual states the engine should be at operating temperature. Not the ideal phrase, but it could be considered a “hot reading”.

Not here to argue but yes, oil levels are designed set to a baseline. Let’s say operating temperature is 200F. That remains very close no matter where I’m driving whether it by -60F in Anchorage or 120F in Phoenix. If you changed your oil in Anchorage and refilled it compared to Phoenix you would have a huge difference based on the rough standard 4% thermal expansion of motor oil for every 100F. So where is it written? In the cubical expansion coefficient for conventional oil that is about 0.0005 1/deg-F. If the oil temperature increases 150F the resulting expansion is 0.0005*150 = 0.075, or 7.5%. I'm in Phoenix so today being 65 degrees when my truck warms up I would be a mere 9oz overfilled if I did it your way. I don't know where you live but if its colder then here, you're overfilling even more. Not BS, just the way all engines are designed. But to your point, I 100% guarantee the engineers at Toyota and every auto manufacturer takes what you're saying and gives a significant amount of wiggle room.

Whatever this forum told me to do
    when I change oil:

When i refill, I put in a dash over 8 qts. then I start it, pull it off the ramps & idle for as long as it takes me to put up ramps & crap.

I turn it off & let it sit for about 15 minutes while I clean up the giant mess I made.

then, I re-check the dipstick....it's usually 7/8th of a smidge low. So I fill to the top line.

thermal expansion science is in there, just in a highly relaxed fashion.

And let’s remember, a guy overfilled his truck with 8.5 qts of oil, after not draining his oil pan ( 17qts total). His engine still ran and did not skip a beat. That extra half quart ain’t hurting anyone.

I put just shy of 9qts when I did mine and it got me midway on the mark. Cranked it after 8 and let it run while I added and checked.

Thanks, man! Kind of dumb question: When it says, “with oil filter”, does it mean you did drain and fill WITH filter replacements?

I've seen reference material before that the entire lubrication system is 9.3 quarts.

I've done oil changes before where I let it drain over night and I had to crack open the 9th quart bottle to get it to the top mark.

I was taught to ALWAYS change the filter. So I use the larger number.

A long time ago I had situation where an extra 4 quarts of oil were added to my car (pre tundra days) and it only held 4 quarts to begin with.

It did NOT go well. Anyone remember the Spy Hunter arcade game, with the smoke cloud evasion trick? Think that. Plus soaked air filter. Plus blown seals.

The engine lasted maybe a week before it completely blew out all the oil and seized up.

That tends to make me careful when I change the oil. That said, I believe there is a bit of "wiggle room" there. I've been doing my best to put approx 7.9qt in, which leaves me with bottles with a smidgen of oil sitting around. :/ Next time I'll use all 8 and be done.

    From my experience.
    6 quarts low mark
7 quarts almost in the middle
8 quarts to the full mark
After running need to add .5 to get back to full mark so capacity with oil and filter is 8.5qts

    None....
Like other poster said it's in the manual. When I change my oil it takes about 8 quarts. If I do 8.5 it's overfilled when hot.

Not sure if any of you use the toyota app. But it is pretty good, manuals, specs, dash lights, make appointments, service history you can add for your truck etc..

Amazing. I can remember what page number it is on in the manual, but I can't remember the capacity . My head doesn't work real good sometimes.

This is just good practice. 3 different vehicles and a trailer at my house so I do the same. Got tired of scouring the manual or google for the torque specs every time I rotate tires
