This might be a silly question, so forgive me if it is. For oil changes, the manual says "7.7 quarts with filter." What exactly is the .7? Is that a little over half a quart or less than that? Thanks in advance.

My GoogleFu says 22.4 fluid ounces.

    Or 111.9 teaspoonfuls.

    Or 0.004 barrels.

    Or 662 ccs.

    Or 1.4 pints.

    Or 2.8 cupfuls.

    :D

Or personally I would put in 8 quarts and call it a day, but maybe I am just lazy and imprecise.

I do 7 (Which is more than 6 but less than 8 btw) and then check it after a quick drive.

I always add 8 quarts with a filter change. Usually the dipstick reads full or a tick over. No issues yet.

Lol You are very precise. I am thinking 7.5ish is just about right who the hell at Toyota came up with .7?

Thou shalt not question the wisdom of Toyota-san!

    :D

(Seriously though, plus or minus half a quart either way would not matter at all to engine operation.)

Why not just measure out the additional 24 ounces they call for and put in the correct amount? Measuring cups are cheap.

I generally buy two 5-quart jugs of oil, put the entire first one in, add what I guess to be 1-2 quarts from the second jug, then check the dipstick after 5-10 minutes. Usually end up having to add a little more to get up to the right spot on the dipstick but I figure better safe than crazy overfilled. Run the engine for 30 seconds to make sure the oil filter is thoroughly filled, then check again and go from there.

I buy three 5 quart Mobil 1 Extended performance jugs. Put in 1.5 jugs (7.5 quarts) and have the other 7.5 for the next time. Fills to just below the high line on the stick.

Second...although I have never, not even once, checked the dip stick after an oil change (or in between) ever since I bought this thing.

If my truck makes it to 100K miles I'll start intermittent oil level checks, but otherwise color me heartless.

Given that I just found that the dealership overfilled mine by 2Q last time, I will be checking from now on.

I think I recently seen a video where some Russian shop made a clear oil pan to see the effects of different oil levels.

My 2015 calls for 7.9 quarts. So I put in 8 qts. The level of oil on the stick is about a quarter inch over the full line. I know its nothing to be concerned about but why is it over? I have a tow package, so I am assuming I have an oil cooler (haven't verified). Once the cooler gets oil flowing through it, does it lower that level?

The dipstick doesn't work well on these 3rd gen engines.

He means its hard to read, need to scuff it up a bit with a scratch bite pad, sand paper or any other abrasive to see where the oil is.
