So I think most people are in agreement that 10k is way too long of an interval for the first oil change. I’ll be changing mine at 5k. I’ve seen a few people say they had their dealer do it at 5k rather than change it themselves. For those that did, have you had any luck getting the dealers to cover it as part of the free service Toyota provides, or have you just paid them to do it?

I had to pay for my 5000 change. They paid for 10000 change and I had to pay for 15000. They didn’t do me any favors.

did my first at 1500 miles at home. Doing my second at 5k at home - dealer may never touch it. Easy to do if you have the tools and time. Change it every 5k other than initial 1500 mile change.

My dealer did it at 2500 for me. No questions asked. They said it would be the first of my 2 freebies.

This was my experience as well. They wouldn’t touch it unless it was at 10,000 or I paid.

Mention you tow and are following the service interval outlined in the owners manual for that. But you do only get your first two for free.

I did oil change myself at 500 miles. Then Dealer changed mine at 5k and 10k. They just told me that I can wait till 10k but I said I prefer 5k oil change and they used my free oil changes.

Did our first one at 5k and will continue every 5k since we live in the mountains and tow a fishing boat.
Dirt roads, towing, lots of stop and go traffic ,every 5K. Mostly country roads and highway, light duty, you could go 10k with a good synthetic oil .

OK, so, when I get to 6 months, I’m supposed to take it in for service, right?

If I only have 3000 miles on the odometer, will the dealer change the oil?

Changed mine and installed a Fumoto valve at 1500. Been doing it my self every 5000 forward. I bring to the dealer for the included change on their schedule. Keeping all records and receipts from changes incase something fails and Toyota claims lack of maintenance.

If you pay them ,yes, otherwise they probably will tell you to come back for the free one, but you never know, ask them.

I had a dealer do the first of my 2 free oil changes at 1500 miles. No questions asked. I had my trusted local mechanic do another at 6500. I plan to use my last dealer freebie at my 10K service. Then it will be back to my mechanic every 5K miles from then on.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Sounds like it all depends on the dealer. Kinda what I expected.

When I bought my 2024 1794, Dealership said first 3 changes including the first at 5,000 or 2 years which ever comes first is free.

I just noticed today that the recommended oil change interval was 10k miles. Not planning on screwing around with that, free oil changes be damned.

My local, trusted mechanic has been working on my cars for over a decade. He is a Toyota guy but also does other Japanese imports. Is there any warranty risk if I take my truck to him before 5k miles for the first oil change? Or should I only stick with the dealer?

With my prior two vehicles (Honda Civic right out of college and then a Nissan Frontier), I never went to the dealer after I purchased them. Never felt they were trustworthy in my younger days (and probably still don’t now).

But with this truck, I want to be really careful with the warranty…for obvious reasons.

It says right in The owners manual, change at 5k if towing, off road, dusty conditions, and so on. Change and get a receipt.

Didn’t know how particular they got - or even if they really cared - if I said change it due to dusty conditions. If I even have to justify it.

I mean. Dust surrounds us all. Right now. Who amongst us…

I did my first one at 1700 miles and 5K. Dealer will do 10K then I’ll do 5K myself. Only because I bought the prepaid maintenance up to 85K.

Yea I did a 5k and a 10k myself. Not quite a big fan of dealership maintenance.
