Guys I'm changing my oil in my 2020 tundra. Using the TRD oil filter this time. Part number ptr43-00081. And it seems to be a lot looser on the perforated tube than the standard oil filter is this normal? Shown in pic

Bump. It says this is the right one. Just seems weird how loose fitting it is compared to stock

I experienced the same thing. I proceeded putting it together and have not had an issue over the past 4k miles but I will go back to the standard filter that fits the housing like a glove.

ETA it fits that way because you're trying to put it on a truck that is not a true TRD Pro. :anonymous:

Yeah that’s normal, I used TRD filters on and off for 10 years on various vehicles including a 5.7 Tundra and they’ve all been like that.

Thanks man. Yeah when it's sitting there level it's better. I tilted it to side in pic to show the diameter difference. I was just surprised since I had to work the regular one on.

Only concern I would have is if the inside diameter is larger, is there less filter media because the filter radial thickness [(OD-ID)/2] is less? o_O

When the filter and housing is installed, the spring-loaded cartridge will be pushed down below the top of the perforated tube. The cartridge has a sealing element (red o-ring) that seals against the inside top of the oil filter bracket, and another on the bottom to seal on the filter housing drain valve. IMO, additional clearance on the perforated tube makes no difference, unless the total length of folded filter media is reduced as a result.

The oil filter housing appears to be aluminum. Are you sure the center tube was changed when you converted to that filter housing?

It’s been shown in various places that the TRD filter is VERY high quality, comparable to other high end oil filters and good for running very long intervals or in high performance applications. I no longer use them because my new Tundra is a flex fuel that asks for 5k intervals. So I use the base OEM filter with whatever cheap 0w20 I can get.

Yes I'm sure. I changed it on my first oil change and it was tight against the OEM standard filter.

The center tube is a support for the stock filter...that's why it fits snugly. You want those inner pleats contacting the tube. With the TRD filter having a metal inner core, the center tube is there to align the filter to housing. You don't want the metal center tube to contact the (TRD) metal inner core the same way as that snugly fit stock filter. Also look at the type and position of the holes in the center tube vs metal inner core...if they were against each other some holes may be covered by the solid area of the other.
The TRD filter offers some particulate efficiency gains over stock...

I tried the TRD filter on my last oil change. After 3k miles I had a “weep” develop around the housing (creating an oily fuzz). Switched back to OEM Toyota and problem hasn’t returned.
