Has anyone done their own oil change yet?

Any tips or pointers? I am assuming the filters are available at the stealerships?

Why not take it to the dealer for the service? It’s free for 2 years/25k miles.

I’ve done my own oil change on my 2022 at 600 miles. Wanted to do it at 500 but oil filter wasn’t available yet at the time. Suggest getting a 15mm hose to drain the oil filter. Keeps everything clean. Got the hose off Amazon. Cut it in half and saved it for later. The original oil was really black.

Well, I am a 4-5K oil change kinda guy. The "free" oil changes can only be done at 10k intervals.

Thanks! How many quarts? I had heard that the filter was designed in an upside down vertical position....doesnt look like it. Did you use an OEM Toyota filter?

Huge fan of the break-in oil change. Everyone including the manufacturers say it's unnecessary but throughout this form (1998-2022) when people send their first sample to Blackstone it always comes back high in metals. Blackstone always states this will reduce in subsequent changes after break-in. I also do the diff's as they also have shown early high metals from Blackstone. TFL Truck literally just did a video on their 2022 Tundra and it also showed high break-in metals on first oil change. Pretty cheap and simple maintenance to argue against it.

That's not a Toyota policy, that must be your dealer making up rules. I was told to use them whenever I wanted. I asked about the "need" to change the oil at 500 or 1000 miles and was told it wasn't necessary but could use my "free" oil changes and do 500 and 1000 if I wanted to.

You can tell them to do it at 5k if you want. I had them do both 2 free oil changes at 5k and 10k.
The manual states to do them at 5k if you're a normal driver that drives where temperatures go below 32F or don't drive 300-400miles a day.

Has anyone here actually had a dealership use the wrong fluid or otherwise mess up a fluid service?

    Just did mine yesterday:
    -12mm socket
    -14mm socket
    -46 mm oil filter wrench.
    - length of 15mm hose

Had a bitch of a time getting oil filter off until I got the proper oil filter wrench. Could not get strap wrench to budge it, it is a tight area.

I think the oil filter was tighten on by the Hulk. That shit was tight as hell.

I manage to get it off with a Harbor freight oil filter pliers. Crushed the hell outta the filter though. There was tons of room for me, once the engine undercover was removed.

Torque specs if anyone wanna follow "factory spec" even tho it was tighten way more when they assembled the engine:

    I just hand tightened it.

13 lb-ft for the filter. Think: snug aspirin bottle lid. That's it.

The fact they have to list the oil fill quantity without changing the oil filter is scary. I can't think of a reason you wouldn't change your filter during the oil change, but I guess it happens enough that Toyota felt the need to list it. As least the dry fill, I can understand if you had to drop the oil pan or some major engine work.

If you change your oil every 2.5-3k miles say with a vacuum extractor - there’s no need to change the filter very often.

I don't really "change" my oil as much as I leave the drain plug off and have a giant, gravity fed tank of fresh oil just constantly feeding into my engine.

    Pros:
    • Engine ALWAYS has fresh oil.
    • Engine will last forever.

    Cons:
    • Oil is REALLY heavy, thus gas mileage is awful.
    • It's not exactly what you would call "environmentally friendly"
    • Carrying a giant tank of oil makes the engine work a lot harder due to weight...thus probably eliminating the #2 bullet above.

Dealers should agree to do the free oil changes at any time you want. On my 2021 Tacoma, I had the dealer do the 10k service with the oil change at 5k. I will likely do the same with my new Tundra.

I changed my oil at 6k and was shocked how black the oil was… wish I had changed it much earlier. I am sending it in for analysis. I’ll post here with the results.
Also going to stick to a change every 5k.
