Oil changes 3000 miles or 5000 miles?

I have a 2015 CM with a 5.7L I have been changing the oil at 5000 miles, my daughter has a 2010 CM with a 4.6L she was told to change at 3000 miles.
we both use Mobil one 0w20 Synthetic Motor Oil.
I try and check my oil about every 2-3 fill ups. it looks like it could be a little low on oil. (no leaks or burning oil that I can tell).

seen where someone made a comment that when you go 5000 miles between oil changes that it is hard on the Cam Tower seals any truth to that. Could that be what is making the Cam Towers seals leak.

Oil change intervals should be as recommended in the owner's manual. I have a FFV and it recommends 5,000, but I think it is even lower depending on the actual gas you are using. Some engines are 10,000 intervals.

Absolutely no truth to the oil change interval being related to the Cam Tower seals. The seals are just a crappy design. Some of them will leak no matter what you do.

As stated. FFV is 5000. Non FFV is 10k.

Not sure what you have? Check your gas cap to see if you can use E85 or not.

Also, the 5.7 takes 7.9 qts. I use 6.9 qts of oil and use 1 qt of Lucas Oil, Full Synthetic Stabilzer. Used the stuff for years and swear by it.
I know some DOD ninjas over in the sandbox that use it in their rigs. Good enough for them, good enough for me.

I'd just go by the manual on the interval. I can see changing it early on the first oil change when brand new (though I hear it's really not necessary). But otherwise, I think changing the oil at 3k miles is a waste.

Up to u. It may be old school but I have 300k+ cars with no engine trouble 4 years old. 3k mike changes. They put 10k cause maintenance is free for two years. :anonymous: Your car will be ok up to the warranty period.

I agree w this. I do tundra between 5000-7000, do what makes you feel good without exceeding 10 (non flex fuel).

My new flex fuel 5.7 Toyota care does it every 5000 miles or 6 months which is my case. Bought in oct 2019. Door sticker reads 9 2019 built.

Huh. I have an 18, 5.7, non-FFV. Manual specifies 5k oil change interval, currently paid with Toyota care.

Took mine to the dealer at 5k and they told me oil changes are every 10k on the newer trucks. Seems weird but I will follow the manufactures recommendations.

The online manual for a 2018 non-FFV indicates a 10,000 mile oil change interval. Might want to double check yours. Page 38 in the maintenance log, you can see the maintenance log and oil changes are only on the 10,000 marks. Not that changing every 5K is bad, but just a waste of money. There is "maintenance" recommended every 5,000, but each interval does not recommend oil changes for non-FFVs.

I have a 2017, 5.7L, FFV (flex fuel). I change every 10,000 miles. Use Mobil 1 0W20 full syn. I've sent my last 3 oil changes to Blackstone Labs and the report back from them is all is great. They actually suggest using a 13,000 mile oil change interval now. You'll want to know my last change was at 40,000 miles and I'm at 42,000 miles now. I didn't send the lab the Mama Toyota original oil.

Now. The 5,000 mile interval for FFV engines in the Toyota manual. That manual MUST address the possibility that the owner of a FFV engine WILL run E85 gasoline. Therefore the lower mileage interval. This is the concept of "lowest common denominator." You can have an FFV engine, not run E85, and change it every 5,000. But my belief is you sure don't have to.

And now the lawyer part: YMMV.

Can you post the last Blackstone Lab report? I haven't submitted mine yet and would love to see how it looks. TBN report is worth the extra few bucks. It's good to hear that they are recommending extending intervals, shows the engine tolerances are pretty good and using a quality oil reaps benefits.

FFV intervals, in my mind are shorter as a CYA/Litigation effort, they actually recommend 2500 mile oil changes if you're actually using E85, show's how crappy that fuel really is on parts.

I have an 07 5.7 with the tow package, I guess the first year oil cooler lines are something small like that was diff with the tow package, (correct me if I'm wrong) but my pops bought the truck new in 07 and has done every 3000ish and I bough it from him in 14 and done every 3000ish. All been conventional and never swap weights for in winter, I live in IL. My dad's in the union for heavy machinery (local 150) and is one of those baby EVERY peice of equipment we own, so that's why we've done every 3000 but I'll tell you what I've rolled over 210k this past summer and there truck runs the same as it did at 5k, 50k,150k and I can only guess that doing it every 3000 helped quite a bit with that

I had one done at ~57K miles. I didn't get the TBN as I am under warranty until 100,000 miles, so I am going to stick with the 5K interval until that runs out. Report indicated that my engine was wearing slightly higher than average. But not too bad.

Lately I’ve been changing mine every 7-8k miles. I use Mobil1 synthetic.

I just have a feeling you’ll never find somewhere that says, “man if only you changed your oil every 5k instead of 8k then you wouldn’t be having all these problems.” Just listen to your owners manual and stick within their guidelines.

The Iron number is the only one that sort of pops with me, but that's not a bad number really. The other high ones may be the oil. What Air Filter are you using?

OEM. Really, I don't think that was a bad report at all. I only got the report at the time out of curiosity. I will start getting them again once I break past the warranty point.

I agree, it's not bad at all. I ask about the Air Filter because the Silicon number is really really low. This shows that the OEM filter is pretty dammed good.
