Don’t tell me to search or you can F off

Skipped my last free oil change today. Wanted to do myself because the effed up my daughters RAV housing.
Housing tabs cracked. I call dealer. They say bring in. I fill oil. Start. Housing cracked. Oil on driveway

how many others have had dealer put on so tight that it broke?

I’m an attorney. Considering lawsuit. And if there’s enough, maybe class action for defective parts

pm me if you’ve had same issue on any Toyota car.

They didn’t crack mine, but 1st free one on my 2017 everything was cranked way to tight. Dealer didn’t give me back my locking lug nut adapter back, went back and argued with them. They suddenly found it. That’s when I said never again unless it’s warranty work.
Guy changing oil just moved up from washing cars.

I snapped off a lug on the plastic part forming the base of the housing when I performed a change several years ago, do you mean that or the aluminum upper part? I was using the correct tool and everything was torqued up to manufacturer specs.
Obviously, plastic gets very hot and goes brittle after a while, my vehicle would have been about seven years old at the time. The replacement housing was reasonably cheap and locally available.

Would I want Toyota to replace it with an aluminum cap, hell no! I would rather have the lower part break than have a similar substance to the upper and run the risk of over tightening into the upper and splitting that or chewing the threads in the upper. Those caps are something I'd label as a consumable part, up there with suspension tie rods, windshield wipers, bulbs, spark plugs, etc. A pain in the butt when they do go snap because it's not something you get any prior warning on but, personally speaking, I wouldn't rate it up there with sticking gas pedals, faulty airbags badly designed transmission parts etc.

IIRC I think there are aluminum aftermarket caps, if you like that kind of thing.

EDIT: Sorry, just realised I'm in the 2.5 gen section, to be clear I have a 2nd gen.

The tabs on my plastic housing all snapped. I’m trying to get it off, it apparently had a crack and sprayed oil all over when I started it to bring to dealer

as far as the aluminum one, I’ve not heard about it seizing together

You'll need a strap wrench or, as I did, bust it out with a hammer and coal chisel - not something I'd recommend for anyone that might be ham fisted.

At dealer now. They showed me video of getting it off. Their housing wrench tool is waaaay bigger than they ones they sell to consumers. I’ve inquired and will be getting that heavier duty housing socket. Twice as thick as the Motiv or even the “thicker” one in the parts department.

I considered breaking it apart. But my fear was I break something else and then I’d have to pay for repairs. I have AAA premium so the tow was free other than the $30 tip I have to the tow truck driver

but they are installing my new filter and metal housing and replacing my oil

When I did my first “post-freebie” change, the housing was at least three ugga-dugga’s tight. It took an air impact on the MotivX housing tool (which survived but is notably distorted now) to break mine loose. But it wasn’t cracked at all.
I replaced with the aluminum one because that’s what I did on my 2008, and put back on with a correctly calibrated and set torque wrench.

So dealer re-did my oil change and installed the metal filter housing.

they forgot to put in the longer filter tube…

here’s pic of the long tube….on my old filter housing…I knew there was a reason to ask for all my parts back

frontier Toyota in Santa Clarita CA. Arshak the service manager is great. They’re gonna redo my oil change next week. Thankfully my truck is not my daily driver

unfortunately, several posts about a subject that has been discussed get a response of “don’t you know how to use the search button”. So for those folks, maybe they should get off their righteous podiums and “lighten up”

I'm with you. Don't take no crap from Toyota or any Toyota Dealership. I'd sue both. Spend $10K-50K fighting something you 1000% can't prove against a car company and dealership with an endless supply of legal "tie-ups" to keep it going for years. But in the end, you know, in 2027, you actually may win(No Chance) and they will hand you a new plastic oil canister cap that cost them $6.99. GO get'em Perry Mason cause your obviously a lawyer.

$10k-$50k? Ha ha ha. Not even. The amount I’d spend would be zero if it were picked up as a CA. And if not, it would be pennies for me

F$&k the dealer. I have a lease so I was doing the free oil changes. Then with all the prices going up and then selling at MSRP I have decided to keep my truck. So I started to do my own oil changes. Did my first one at 15k, 5k over the first oil change. Pull the filter and it looked kinda black. Didn’t think nothing of it. Go to change it at 20k and the filter is lighter. Leads me to believe that the dealer didn’t change it at 10k. Did it again at 25k and it’s the same color. Which proved my point that they don’t change it. My dad has a similar experience with his tire rotation. They said they did it but never asked for the wheel lock key. It was an aftermarket key so it wasn’t like they had it like they would a Toyota lock key. Just like my wheels when I went to rotate them. They use a important gun and don’t care about torquing them to spec, same with the oil filter. I stay far away from the dealer unless it’s a warranty issue.

Yeah - but I usually wait till they wade into the thread before telling them to take a ride on the pecker pony.

you, sir, have a shit run of luck with that dealer and oil changes. You sure you want them to do another one? I might at least be asking to stand there and watch every step of the process.

It was the last of the "Toyota care" free ones...and I asked if I could watch. They pointed to the sign that says employees only. Now that they effed up by not swapping the filter tube, I'm going to ask again to avoid me returning...again. I ordered another metal filter housing for my wife's Lexus. Exact same part number. Considering putting the longer filter tube in it myself, taking it there and having them just swap entire thing with the metal housing that they installed previously. Or swapping myself.

Anyone ever change oil filter WITHOUT draining oil? Curious how much oil gets dumped?

To those who have an issue with the intro, my apologies for impacting your sensitivities. But if you're looking to "make friends," post a response, not "use the search tool"

I do my own changes and this 'new' filter cartridge system was always a pain. I drain oil from the pan and then just unscrew the whole cartridge with siphon underneath to catch any left-over runoff. I never unscrew that little drain plug on the cartridge.

Since there is a rubber seal on the cartridge housing, I don't tighten her hard, so next time it's an easy unscrew. If I'm extra careful and gentle, I can unscrew the whole housing by using a medium size wrench, turning the drain plug CCW.

I don't have an adapter to remove cartridge housing. Always using a screwdriver, my hand or some other unconventional means.

Changing the housing, I don’t know how much is lost.
But I recently heard a story about adapting a vacuum to the oil fill tube that allowed pulling the drain plug to replace with a fumoto valve without losing any oil - so that’s kind of cool.

I recently changed the oil in my daughters 2008 Forester that has a standard filter underneath. That fucking thing got more oil all over me than this cartridge filter ever has. I was actually wishing it had the Tundra filter.

On the other hand, my wife’s 2017 Forester has the filter up on top (filter is upside down) and a little flange around it to capture the tiny bit of oil the isn’t drained out. That thing is a dream.

Yeah, I do all the service on my mom's 2015-16 Forester. Oil can filter on top with that flange. Very very easy!
