I’ll be doing my first oil change on my 2020 Tundra. Previously done at dealership, but doing it myself every 5K miles.

Never owned a vehicle with canister type filter. Always spin on. Hand tight and 1/4 turn has always worked for me.

With this canister filter housing should I break out my torque wrench or is snug good enough ?

    thanks

Hand tight and then 1/4 turn works for me. 18ft lbs is nothing.

I just do snug. About the same as a spin on.

This ^^^. Sounds like you're using the stock cap which is plastic. Going into aluminum. Calibrate your elbow and just get it firmly snug.

It seal with the new o rings, not a gasket that need pressure. Hand tight is good enough

There's actually a metal tab that you can see as you're spinning it on that is there to help prevent it from coming loose I usually get it tight and get it to just pass that metal tab on one of the notches on the cap

I use a torque wrench but it seems to be like any other oil change I've done maybe the crush washer is tighter.

I believe it is 24Nm for the canister and 12 Nm for the canister drain bolt. As previously mentioned these seal with o rings.

I think the quick change oil people see these and have meltdowns. It's not that bad if you understand the components.

I vote to use the torque wrench btw.

I use the torque wrench to spec so hopefully the housing drain plug loosens without spinning the whole housing. I’m using OEM Tundra housing.

    Too many, but not enough....
You can feel when the o ring is fully engaged. That and when it stops turning and your good.

This is what I do. Torque wrenches are over used by some.

Torque wrenches are great stuff, and using them regularly gets you in a good habit of using and maintaining them properly!

... I'm not always in the good habit of using my two though! My oil filter housing gets snug by hand, 1/8th turn at the most with a ratchet, and I leave it at that.

I tighten it up and then back it off and just barely snug it back on. As hard as it is to get off that damn thing isnt coming loose. I have 3 Toyotas and been doing that on all of them since they switched to the plastic housing.

These are super easy ones, as they firmly stop when you’re bottomed out. Once it stops, I apply just a little torque. Think about how much you could do with a regular length Allen wrench.

    Fucking dealership.
Went to take drain cap off. And it was so tight it pulled the whole thing off. So couldn’t drain oil from filter and made a mess.
Even with it off the truck couldn’t separate them, so had to drive 45 mins to dealership to get the 2 parts I need.

dealership was only place to change oil prior to today.

I hope the dealership offered to replace at no charge. Mine did after they over tightened it and I destroyed it getting it off.

Didn’t even talk to them. Had to borrow a car to drive to dealership and rain coming in a couple hours. Just need to get it done.

I decided to replace the whole thing because once I had it off I checked the fit of my Motiv-x wrench and it didn’t fit quite right. So I assumed it was deformed and went and got a new one.

won’t have to worry about it again. Used torque wrench. 30lbs on drain pan was a little more than I expected, the 18 lbs was about what I expected.

If you come across one of the filter housing drain plugs that is 4-ugga dugga tight again, try hitting it with an impact wrench to pop it free. I’d bet it snaps that fitting loose before the whole shebang comes all the way loose.

    Torque.

There is almost no reason not aside from laziness and a few seconds saved.
