I just purchased a 2002 Tundra 4.7L, the oil pressure gauge was not working when I bought it.

The oil level is above minimum and I am assuming the pump is fine because I have driven it over 200 miles with no issues.

Looked under the hood and saw the wire was chewed up by the belt. I replaced the damaged wire and verified its condition by unplugging the sensor connector and with key on and sensor connector jumped to engine ground, can see battery voltage through the wire.

I went ahead and replaced the pressure sensor since it was still the original and they are relatively cheap. I replaced it with a Dorman ps355, it looks identical to the original, some of them do not have the large bell housing on them, I am not sure why.

This did not fix the problem. With the connector plugged back into the sensor, gauge still reads 0v with key on engine off and key on engine on.

With the connector unplugged from the sensor and jumped to engine ground, while engine is on gauge reads high voltage(above the 3/4 mark).

This sounds to me like the sensor is bad but the sensor is brand new. I tested the resistance between the two terminals of the gauge behind the cluster and it read~48 ohms, service manual says approx. 25 ohms. According to the manual I should replace the cluster.

I could replace the instrument cluster but I am unsure if the gauge is bad, if the resistance of the sensor is too high, wouldn't the battery voltage be suppressed by the gauge?

I feel like I am just throwing parts at this problem and it is a little discouraging.

Any advice or opinions would be great I am running in circles, thanks.

You may want to search the site here but I believe people have had issues with aftermarket sensors and gone with OEM or its OE equivalent to fix their issues. You shouldn’t have to replace an entire cluster.

    • Low oil pressure gauge (00-02 Tundra / 01-04 Sequoia): There's a TSB out to address the situation with the oil pressure gauge reading low in these years. Check to see if your VIN applies by reading the TSB here but before you replace the sensor, read this note too.

It may be b/c it’s a “live” thread. I have people shoot me things to update at least a couple times a month.

Thanks, that's a great resource but it doesn't mention anything about oil pressure sensors. With all due respect, the summary of everyone's input was, buy a better part, and you can probably find the answer somewhere else. That doesn't really sound like much help.

Gotcha. Yeah, we have a hard time helping people who can't help themselves. Especially considering nobody here is getting paid.

There's pretty clearly info in the first two replies of that thread, and a few cautionary warnings about using aftermarket parts, and buying parts from scAmazon/fleaBay/etc.

If you're unhappy with the free support you're getting, the exit is the same way you came in...

Fishing's not that hard, but whatever. Here's a fish. Below is not only a link to the exact part that you need, but it's also a link to a site that will give you 25% off, $0 tax and free shipping if you order today. Short of purchasing it and installing it for you, it's the best were going to do. Happy trolling.

I mean, the correct pressure sensor p/n is also right there in the TSB document linked in the megathread, along with the VIN series impacted by the issue so OP could confirm.

To boot, that thread warns about bizarre-ass responses from aftermarket sensors, and how it's not advised to go aftermarket with electronics because it's caused problems for so many other fly-by-nighters hitting this forum with issues related to non-OEM parts.

I have a 2005 double cab. When I first got it it had the wrong oil filter.
The pressure was lower. I installed. Toyota OEM filter, and replaced the oil pressure sender also.
I don’t remember if I bought A Toyota oil pressure sender OEM. If I didn’t, would a pressure sender from the
older first gen improve my gauge reading? It’s not low, but would like to see it closer to
half way than 1/4. It sits at 1/4 all day long, unless I’m gunning it.

probably. Mine sits just about 2-3mm shy of half way up. And that’s while idling

if I give it any gas. It goes to about the 2/3mark

Gauge itself changed in '05-'06 (I think '05 is start), where most needles sit at center as it should be. Earlier years, not so much.

Toyota's filters are also higher flow by design, which you'd think would lead to less pressure? But I dunno.

I bought my 2000 in 2005 and it had almost no pressure at idle and may 1/8 at speed so I replaced the sensor. I think the parts count told me there was an updated version with larger office but hey that was almost 20 yrs ago. After that I’m close to 1/2 at idle and 3/4 at highway speeds.
