Ok to disconnect seat weight sensor?

Does anyone know if it is ok to disconnect the sensor under the passenger seat that detects weight?

I very rarely have anyone in the front seat that would need to be reminded to buckle their seat belt, and I don’t want to risk keeping the seat buckled when no one is there and have the air bag activate in the event of an impact.

Sorry, not following the concern of air bag activation? You don't want the airbag to go off?

When we are pheasant hunting and moving from filed to field, I will buckle the belts.

Sometimes I buckle the front pass seat when I have the front seat loaded with gear as well.

What are trying to accomplish? If no one is in the seat, the sensor keeps the reminder chime, and the airbag from going off. Isn’t that what you want?

You can disable the passenger seatbelt reminder using Carista or TechStream. I’d recommend checking out Carista for its simplicity.

The occupation detection ecu aka weight sensor determines the weight of your passenger and classifies them as adult or small child.

If small child it turns the airbag off I think.

It is part of the algorithm to determine if/if not the airbag goes off. I would not disconnect it.

If you do anything turn off the chime for the passenger seat belt as mentioned above.

Is there even a chime for a non-existing passenger? None of my vehicles chimes for an empty passenger seat

I was assuming OP meant he has a bag or something in the passenger seat that sets off the sensor, but I suppose it’s good to get clarification there.

Correct - bag in the front seat and the chime is irritating. When the chime gets to the fast speed, it beeps exactly 50 times. I count it every time.

makes sense. Easiest path is to buckle the seat belt. What’s one more airbag going off in the cab during a wreck? Likely total the vehicle anyway. If the seat detects an occupant, the airbag is going off whether the seat is buckled or not.

Just had a thought - as long as anything I have in the front seat doesn’t weigh as much as the adult human, I should be able to fasten the seat belt and the air bag would not deploy.

Does anyone know what that weight transition is?

Why does it matter if the airbag goes off if you're in an accident? If it's bad enough that your airbag deploys the vehicle is likely totaled. Crumple zones work wonders for passenger survivability, but not for the vehicle's. Also, if you have a bag that is heavy enough to set off the sensor for the belt, I'd be using the belt to secure it. In an accident that bag becomes a missile and if left unrestrained it can kill you.

As far as missiles are concerned, which is the reason behind this post, I am using carabiners to secure my bags to the metal posts of the headrest. It is a constant DIY project to organize my truck in a way that is functional while also aesthetically pleasing.

Why not just put the bag where it belongs...on the floor?

The seat sensors will change the timing in the airbag deployment. By disconnecting it The Airbag ecu will not be able to adjust timing or deployment of the airbag based off the weight of an occupant in that seat.

Not a good idea to put a ruck sack with a 30 lb ruck plate anywhere, except maybe in the bed, because it might fly out. You see … the bridge that connects my little slice of Heaven collapsed recently. The two sides are ~juuuusst~ close enough that if I get myself up to 88 mph, I can launch myself back in time to before the bridge was out. And on the way back home home, I just do the same thing, but launch myself forward in time.

How about just disable the seat belt beeper?
