A little back ground for this question.
    - noticed some white smoke on startup yesterday, enough that it blew by my passenger window, disappeared in 3-5 seconds
    - didn't notice it again till this morning, not as much smoke this morning ,but it is windy
    - dealer changed oil approximately 400 miles ago
    - trucks a 5.7 2014 with 165000 miles
    - noticed the oil is over the fill dot by close to 1/4 inch20190419_090246.jpg
    - truck was pretty much level maybe a little nose high, when checking dip stick
    - could this bit of overfill cause smoke on startup?
    - Going to drain some anyways also keeping an eye on the coolant overflow.

White smoke is definitely an indication of too much oil

Had my first free dealer oil change last month.
Double checked it when i got home and let it sit. Same issue. 1 qt too much oil. Luckily you dont have to drop the skid to drain.
Will religiously check it for the remainder of the free oil changes

Do you figure I'm about a quart over?
I have to get one of those oil extractors(sucker), to suck the excess out the dipstick shaft.

Better yet a Fumoto oil drain valve!

Easy peezy to drain off excess oil. Simple and clean.

    ~$25 on Amazon.

Not saying that anyone is doing anything wrong just pointing out a process that often isn't done correctly. When checking your oil level make sure your truck is up to operating temp, park on level ground, let it sit for 5 minutes, then check the level. If you check it cold or after it's sat for a while you'll get a high reading every time.

    Thanks for the reminder.
I had to go into work this morning so it was up to temp. but I may have waited to long before checking probably closer to a half hour.

Always thought white smoke was indicative of burning coolant. Blue smoke was oil. Black smoke was raw fuel. :notsure:

I let them do a coolant change as well as a oil change last time in.
Just changing the coolant shouldn't cause the problem I know but I am going to keep an eye on the overflow level of the coolant..
Normally would change the oil myself but it's just as cheap to get them to do it.

I am not sure that would cause a problem with smoking. If it were that it would probably smoke all the time. An overfill by 1 Qt would not be enough to cause any over-pressure in the crankcase that would push oil through the piston rings. Generally if it's only happening after the truck sits for a while it's an indication of leaking valve seals or worn seals and guides, or maybe a bad head gasket. With the mileage you have on your truck that could very well be the case.

My taco had 165,000 on it before I sold it and every once in a while it would do the same. If it happens sometimes then it could be related to what position the valve is in (making the seal leak) when the engine stops.

Could just be condensation in the exhaust causing a little white smoke on start up in the morning.

@johnvan makes an excellent point. I've had this happen a few times, particularly this time of year. The truck gets up to temp, sits outside in chilly or rainy weather, cools off and on start up I got a quick puff of white smoke that was just hot exhaust blowing condensation out of the tailpipe.

    I hope it's just condensate,time will tell I guess.
I'll keep an eye on the coolant for sure, on min. when cold, also going to suck out abit of oil.
    Thanks for the replies.

I always change my own oil because,..having worked in a garage in my youth, I like to see what’s going on... this sounds paranoid but... Another possibility on the overfill is the tech forgot to change the oil filter and didn’t compensate for the extra oil on the refill.

    Still rolling stock baby....
I had a dodge dealership once over fill the oil by 5 quarts, yes they put 10 quarts of oil in.

Drove real funny going home, on turns the engine seemed to almost lock up. Stop for gas check the oil, was like WTF!!!!

Dealership was closed so I called next day, Saturday. Was told oh well just drain some of it out, No said I, how about I bring it down and you clowns re do the oil change, we cant its Saturday, ok see you Monday.

I flogged the shit out of that truck that weekend with 10 quarts of oil in it.

Damn thing held together, never even blew a seal.

Monday I pulled in and the smart ass who told me to drain the oil was there, I gave him a ear full when the head service advisor and owner came up, I unloaded about the whole thing from the monkey who did that oil change to the service guy I spoke to on Saturday.

Even the mechanics were like shit wtf? It held together LOL....

Got the oil changed again and lots of apologies, oil change monkey got the boot tho.

White smoke is condensation in exhaust or it burning coolant
    Oil is blue
To much fuel is black... rolling coal
    It’s more than likely condensation

You can also slightly open oil filter and drain off some excess.

Burning oil smells very strongly of burning oil. You can't mistake it for anything else.

White vapor in any cold and humid start up is completely normal.

I can't say what the smoke would be from, but I really doubt it has anything to do with that oil level. Don't want it above the upper marker but I sort of doubt that amount of extra is going to cause any problems.

When I check my oil, I park in the same spot and for some reason, the level on the dipstick will change every time. Sometimes on the mark, sometimes above. I dunno.... oil fairies must be messing with me.

Overfilling...yikes. Just wanted to mention that I was working on a 2005 Tundra. Ended up doing a lot to it. When it was brought into the shop, it was billowing white smoke. Power steering was whining and so on. A lot of issues....anywho after changing the rack, power steering pump, lines, all engine gaskets, white smoke was still coming out. Then I noticed the power steering res was empty. Checked for leaks and couldn't find a dang drop anywhere. On the 05 4.7 they have a power steering air control valve that feeds off the power steering res. That check valve was bad so the fluid was leaking into the intake manifold, hence the white smoke. The smoke would clear up a bit after warming up and draining the ps res but that was my white smoke issue. Wouldn't hurt to check that. Just my experience.... this truck is a security truck for a church. It basically lives in idle so this was the sludgiest engine I had ever seen. Valve covers, oil pan. It had leaks and they were running it with low oil. The thing is still going strong and no more white smoke or leaks. But the biggest issue with white smoke was the faulty air control valve.
