So I bought my Tundra 2 days ago. I've put about 80 miles on it, and the check engine light came on. It's a P0333 code. I've read others on here who replaced their knock sensors (and the starter since they were in there) and that resolved the problem for them.

I've also seen suggestions to replace the spark plugs and ignition coils.

Is there 1 I should try before the other?

    Truck runs fine. 207k miles. 4.7L v8.

Are the NGK knock sensors and ignition coils from Rock Auto ok? Or should I look for something else?

Welcome! Makes sure you check out the "so you bought a tundra" thread. Has everything you need to get started...right @shifty`

Personally, I'd take a look at the plugs and probably replace them anyway. Get the ngk model with correct gap out of the manual, i think your version likes iridium?? mine prefers copper and I'm running the Denso model from the manual.

Less invasive and, like, 20 minutes of your time. Coils aren't too $$$ and new ones can't hurt if you can afford it, but you're going to learn a lot after looking at the plugs.

Oh and RA is fine for a lot of stuff, just stay away from Mazon and Eastbay (yall remember eastbay lol?!?)

Also, get your timing belt checked if you don't know the service history.

Ignition coils go Denso from Rockauto if you go that route. I'd wait for those though. You should be getting a misfire code if you had a coil issue.

Thanks! Will try the plugs first.

I've got a bit before the timing belt needs to be replaced again. I do have the history on that.

Unfortunately I do think the clip for the lever to release the hood broke yesterday. The lever inside the cab releases the hood, but the lever on the hood is just hanging there loose, so I'll have to figure that out.

I'll almost guarantee you it's rodents have chewed through the wires - again, see the 'so you just bought a 1st gen' thread - but I'll add some other stuff here.

Before you touch anything, reset the code. See if it comes back. If it does, be prepared. It's rarely the knock sensor going bad. This may very well be what you're up against, and I bet the seller cleared codes on you before sale (any good reader will tell you when codes were last reset): https://www.tundras.com/threads/knock-sensors-plus.123456/#post-3162700

If you have a borescope or similar type camera, you may want to try and finagle it to look up under the intake manifold.

Meanwile, I'll tell you this also, and the reason I tell you. I too have an '06 w/2UZ. I park indoors, always, away from pesky rodents, in a nicely sealed garage that's regularly checked for activity. However, twice in the past year I've gotten knock sensor codes within a 1 mile of startup from cold. 1 time, no change in running. Other time, truck was pretty limpy. Resetting the code the 1st time it stayed away for months. 2nd time, when it went to limp mode, I pulled over, cleared codes on the spot, stopped/started and it's been gone for many weeks if not months.

    Thanks Shifty!

I already reset the code. I'll see if it comes back. I'm also going to pull the plugs to check their condition just so I know.

I do own a borescope. I will get it under the intake so I can see if there are signs of rodents.

Good call on parking indoors. Unfortunately I've got a 2 car garage but 3 vehicles so 1 has to stay outside...

I mean ... one of the last guys who got chewed up on here ended up installing mesh over the gap they use to access. Someone messaged me on here and said (maybe the Landcruisers with the 2UZ?) have a multi-piece foam block kit installed from the factory to block off the access point under the manifold they use? I dunno.

Anyway, just to add to this so I can find it later, I remember @chrisb was having similar issue with his truck. I haven't whipped out my borescope, but this was my first instance last October and it happened right after a fill-up at a gas station known for occasional bad gas, then this was my second, more recently, where the truck was running a little funky until I cleared the code (not sure I'd call it "limp mode" but definitely running less-than-optimal).

I have a borescope, I've been threatening to pull it out and look up under there just in case something happened to a previous owner, but I would've expected these codes to pop up way sooner, I've had the truck 4-5 years now, IIRC. Granted, I've only put 13k-14k miles on it, but ...

Thanks. I have plenty of chicken wire, so my plan is if I do end up taking the intake off is to use that to keep them out.

Checking the parts diagrams for the J100 and J200 U2Z engines I'm not seeing a foam block under the intake. Would be nice if there was a factory part I could just put in there though.

Yeah, I wish I could remember who told me about that. I swore they PM'd. Lemme see if I can find it.
