If you have experienced P0440, was it just the gas cap? I just ordered a new one in hopes this makes it go away. Wanted to gather a little info.

If you fixed it with some other remedy, please let me know what it was!

Truck runs fine, but it just doesn't run as nice as before. I'm guessing it is compensating a little for this code, possibly running slightly rich like my old mustang used to when I removed the cats.

    Thanks!

I keep getting this code too. I just clear it and move on, then it comes back after a few drives(about a month). I've also heard it could be some part up under the spare. I think.

Mine was the filler tube itself. It was just dry rotted, only took about 20 minutes to replace in the driveway.

Do you have a link to a walk through or can you give me a high level overview? I have the same code but new gas cap didn't solve it. I was thinking my issue might be the filler tube too.

I was also going to test the purge valve but think I would be getting a second code if that was the cause.

Not a whole lot to it, look up under the truck by the fuel filler. There's an approximately 15" long 1-1/4" diameter hose for the filler. There's a worm drive clamp at each end. You'll need a short screwdriver or a ratchet like the one below to remove the clamps. Pull the hose off each side and then move the clamps to the new hose and reinstall.

Not a hard job by any means it's just cramped up in there.

Thank you for the input! If my cap doesn’t fix it then this will be my next route. Where did you buy the hose? OEM? Local store?

Can’t remember the exact code, but a few years ago had the CEL light up and took it to Auto Zoned for the diagnostic. They said the code was reading some kind of ‘Charcoal Canister’ thinga jig in the gas tank. $400 part!

Called up high dolla service shop and guy said put a new gas cap on it. It worked $8.

I will be buying a new OEM cap as the quickie fix cap doesn’t have that leash attachment I used to enjoy. The little things.

Possibly, you'd definitely want the old one to compare first. It's a weird corrugated hose and has to be flexible enough not to kink and just the correct length since there's no wiggle room.

If my cap doesn’t fix it I’ll buy the OEM hose. It’s only money right?!

I'd double check the part number before you order. They made a few changes and 02-03 have a couple options.

    I’ve got a 2000 so I’m sure it’s just 1 type. Heck I have a manufacture date of 1999

Just to follow up on this in case someone digs this up on the interwebs, I have had the new cap on for a week and the code has not resurfaced. I spent the coin and bought a toyota OEM cap. :mudding:

My P0440 was cleared by reconnecting the cables after my truck was serviced to replace the Knock sensor :(
