Hey guys. I enjoy shooting my Remington 870 Tactical at the range. Unfortunately, it kicks like a mule.

My son shoots with me so I didn’t what to get a butt pad.

Do they have padded shirts to absorb the recoil a bit. They are not easy to find.

I found that if a gun isn’t fun to shoot, you won’t practice with it. Kicking like a mule isn’t fun. Put a pad on it.
Not sure what your son has to do with it. If he’s critical of butt pads, give him the gun and box or two of 00 and see what he thinks after that:D

You may also consider how your body position absorbs recoil. If you take a sideways stance, the "rifleman's" stance where the shotgun is parallel to your chest you will feel more recoil. If you take a more perpendicular stance and allow your body and legs to absorb the recoil, that will help.

On the gun itself, I like the limbsaver recoil pad.

A book I found rather helpful is The Orvis Wingshooting Handbook, Fully Revised and Updated: Proven Techniques For Better Shotgunning by Bruce Bowlen.

    Enjoy!

I shoot a 6# O/U that taught me that I was holding the gun all wrong. Once I changed that, the beast was tamed.

I have a Beretta Shooting vest that came with a Gel pad. The vest has a slot to put the Gel pad in. I also have Winchester pad that straps on.

Agreed. Gun fit and shooter position is everything. I've modified 870 stock for LOP, drop and cast. Makes a world of difference.

One gun is not enough. It's that simple. A semi-auto will recoil noticeably less and would be a better choice for a youngster. (I assume your son is younger.) Fit is especially important for shotguns. A shotgun that fits you and another that fits your son will make shooting a lot more fun for both of you.

When I first purchased the gun, I hired an instructor to teach my son the "right way".

I was looking for a shirt with gel on my right shoulder.

I considered a pad. My son didn't like the idea. I could have taken the "My gun, my rules"...but I am looking for a shirt. Win/win.
