Painting Grill Surround and Chrome Window Trim

I'm looking into painting a couple pieces of my Limited TRD Off Road. The pieces that I want to paint are:

• Grill Surround (color matched to Lunar Rock)
• Mirror Caps (black)
• Window Trim (black)
• Rear Bumper Panels (Lunar Rock)

The surfaces of these parts are slightly different, but I was wondering if the steps I outlined below would be sufficient for all types of surfaces

Steps:

1. Prepare surface with grease and wax remover spray e.g. Dupli Color Prep Spray
2. Sand pieces with 600 Grit Sandpaper
3. Apply Adhesion promotor
4. Apply Primer. Multiple coats as necessary
5. Wet sand primer after dry
6. Apply base color. Multiple coats as necessary
7. Lightly sand with 600 grit sandpaper in between coats
8. Apply clear coat. Multiple coats as necessary

If anyone has any advice on how they painted some of these parts, I would appreciate it.

 

Painting chrome parts does not turn out well.

 

I see you replaced your grill surround on your Tundra. Did you purchase an unpainted grill and paint it yourself?

 

I ordered the color matched grill and bulge from Sparks parts. I don't know what's available for the 22 models.

 

Unpainted grill surround is available from Sparkparts for 270 plus another 70 for shipping. The grill surround on the Limited Off Road isnt really a chrome, but more of a satin silver. Only the window trim is actual chrome.

I figure I might as well give it a shot. If it doesnt turn out, I'll purchase the unpainted pieces and I'll already have all the supplies to paint.

 

Great looking truck. The chrome door handles and window trim don't look half bad. What are the specs on those wheels and tires? Any lift?

2inch Superlift level kit
Mud flaps removed
No rubbing at all

 

Paint or vinyl wrap?

I was going to paint as well, but I recently found a forum member that wrapped it with Lunar Rock vinyl from APA. It looks much easier to do.

I did the same wrap too. Came out a perfect match

 

Looks factory...Did you have to take the 3 grill surround pieces of to wrap them?

 

I did. It’s just got to be easier. I cannot see myself doing it while it was still on. Maybe a professional could do it. But, not this guy. Lol. Honestly it wasn’t that bad. I ordered a wrap install kit on Amazon for $9.99. Made it easier.

 

You think the door handle is wrap-able? From a non professional? lol

 

I actually tried. Looked good. Next day, edges were lifting.

Maybe if you got the ebay covers and wrapped those, it would have a better chance end result. I just left mine black and covered the chrome.

Where did you get the “TOYOTA” grille? Is it OEM?
Do you have a light bar or 3 amber marker lights in your grille now? If so where did you purchase.

Grill came from Sparks. Added some grey stickers on the letters.
DD amber fogs, no marker lights or light bar at this time.

 

Nice man def gonna look into that. I’m also thinking about color matching the bottom bumper cover where the fog lights are. I think yours would look good color matched too!

The chrome delete was just a wrap?

 

No....metal OEM window moldings

 

Same, bought the painted parts from the above website and grill from sparks and just did everything all at once
