Paying extra for OFF-ROAD edition and then changing everything?

So, I'm curious about something. Why do so many people pay extra for the off road package (which is mainly: wheels, tires, different suspension, LED lighting, and decals) for their Tundras and then immediately change everything? I mean, I've seen threads where guys do that and change everything that the off road package comes with within 2-3 months of buying the truck. Why not just buy the most basic package if you're gonna change everything anyways and just save the money that the dealership charges to install that stuff?

If you've got 10k to dump into a truck as soon as you drive it off the lot, youve got an extra 2 to get an sr5 trd package.

I get that, but if there are 2 trucks side by side that are exactly the same other than the package why buy that one if you're going to change literally everything that made the truck a TRD off road?

Don't you also get LED headlights and fog lights with that package? Might be a reason if so...

I got the off road package.....not because I would be going off road a lot, but because I think they look terrible without that trd sticker on the back.....plus I like the wheels better.

I get what you are saying though. I'd imagine people getting limited trims just for the leather and dual climate.

For me it was a resale decision. The higher packages will fetch more at resale or trade in.

I think you actually have to get an upgraded package for certain colors also. I guess that's probably a big reason.

you aren't wrong.... unfortunately, I did the exact same thing you're referring to. I picked up my SR5 TSS edition (basically just the 20" wheels and BFGs with the Nav and the decent inside stuff) but it was only like that for 6 months. I bet I could have saved myself at least 10k by picking a lower model with only the NAV. The only thing I have yet to add to the truck is leather seats and upgraded speakers/head unit. Litterally everything else has changed at least once :frusty::rofl:

I was taking a jab at myself. The only things left on my Pro specific to the model are the seats and bed stamps. Pros are overrated.

Resale value has a lot to do with it. You can dump 20k into an SR5 but it will still be an SR5 and that will impact private and trade-in values.

I did just what you're talking about: bought a Limited with TRD package and then changed out almost everything (just have the tank skid left). I did it because I wasn't expecting to change everything (thought I'd keep the stock skid, liked the wheels) and then got onto this forum and found I wanted to go further. If I was doing it again, I'd still do the limited, but skip the TRD and save some cash.

Yeah. I mean, at the end of the day it's financed so you're not really seeing the big picture when you're excited about your new truck at the dealership. But, it's crazy to me that so many people still do it.

o_O I can see resale value being a big deal, I guess it does make sense. It sucks that you'll lose money regardless though 90% of the time.

:frusty: Dang. The way I see it, I'm gonna buy my dream truck and do what i want to it, and ideally not get rid of it until I need a new one. Probably won't happed, but that's the dream.

On the Limited, the TRD package was something like $40 difference. For me it was worth it just for the fuel tank straps.

I went in to my dealership 100% ready to pull the trigger on a TRD Pro tacoma. Then, we took a test drive with 4 people and immediately knew we needed a bigger cab. So we browsed Tundras, test drove the TRD off-road limited and loved it. I was planning on keeping it stock for a while til I found this forum... look at me now.....

This is nothing new. Just look how huge the aftermarket parts and accessories industry is. And not just for Toyota. Not sure what all the outcry is about.

I think a lot of people buy with off road packages not thinking they’re going to swap parts out later. I was knew I was going to swap stuff out before I bought my truck. I wanted oem leather and 4x4 so I bought a limited 4x4 without packages I knew I could easily upgrade later. There is something to be said for “value”, but I also think your truck is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. I’ve seen base sr5 tundras with after market upgrades at dealerships going for 60k.

I hear what the OP is saying. If I could do it over again. I would have just got a base model 4wd and changed everything around. But I initially planned on just keeping it stock and not changing anything. Soon as I got it off the lot the mod sickness hit lol!!!

Even better.... why would ppl buy a pro and lower it??

My answer is because they can and it’s their money to do what ever the hell they want with the truck!!!

Yeah but you pay more up front. Now if the resale % is higher than I agree but if you are changing everything out then you are probably not getting it back on resale.

Just like people that pay more than MSRP for a PRO or people that put remote resi's on street queens or people that replace UCAs just because. How about people that buy 4x4s in the south that never see dirt. The list goes on.
