Just picked up a new to me but used (27k miles) 2020 after of putting my 2007 (265,000) through 16-17 yrs of hard labor & abuse……..

The 2007 has had a sticky solenoid in the torque converter for quite a few years now and other things were starting to pile up and I decided it was time and went on the hunt and found what I thought was going to be the same exact truck……I was ignorant in thinking they would be identical (I’m talking about everything but the tech).

When I first opened the door on the 2020 the first thing I noticed was no grab handle on the drivers side window pillar I was like, oh man, this ain’t the same, something’s up…….

then noticed the omitted lower door shelf/cup holders on the rear doors, and no lower door courtesy lights on either front or rear doors, etc……I was like WTH……so all this other stuff is definitively irrelevant to this post however it leads me to the PAYLOAD rating question.

the 2007 has a payload rating of 1365 lbs on the door sticker…….
The 2020 has a payload rating of 1290 lbs on the door sticker…..

    the 2007 has 20” rims
    The 2020 18” rims

both same size tire other than the rims……P275 65 just different rim sizes….

I’m trying to figure out why the differences in payload, thinking it has to do with the rims but not sure…….

Its interesting on that on the toyota.com owners section where you log in and then register your vin number, the vehicle specs for the 2007 get really detailed and technical about the frame. I assume the 2020 has the same frame and hasn’t been changed but at the same time the Toyota Factory Vehicle specs through toyota.com on the 2020 VIN specs don’t say shit about the frame and I was wondering if the frame is possibly different now too?

    any input greatly appreciated

    p.s.
I plan on making a few mods such as swapping my Factory Toyota Tow mirror’s, BS step boards, lift kit/susp and a few other things……and will definitely be searching this forum and others to see what else lives out there…..

    all the best

If you still have the 07, the driver's side grab handle will swap right over. There's a bunch of folks (myself included) that have done it. And yeah, there were quite a few unwelcome changes to the interior when they resigned the Tundra in 2014. Typical penny pinching to satisfy the bean counters. Congrats on the new truck and welcome!

In laymen’s terms? 75#’s of safety nanny’s? You mean they derated the payload based on safety stuff?

WFD473……I gotcha, that is my plan. And I’m planning on swapping over the rear doors as well to get the damn cup holders/storage bins that the 2020 doesn’t have + I’ll get the door courtesy light on the bottom of the rear doors. Hoping there an exact swap, only thing I can think of is the wiring connectors might be different but hoping not.

the front cup holders are mini me size compared to my ‘07…….basically they suck…..lol.

and I liked the older center console compartment too and lid that slid……oh well

I bitched too for awhile about a lot of the trivial changes in 2014.
At the end of the day, I'm just glad Toyota decided to continue building the Tundra at all for another 7 yrs. and kept the important stuff the same.

In layman’s terms, there’s an extra 75# worth of safety equipment onboard a truck with the same GVWR. So 75# less payload left.

If you removed the body and just had a rolling chassis with the frame, drivetrain, suspension, etc, it's the same truck from 07-21.
The cab is the same except the floor panels were stamped differently because the seats changed. The dash was designed differently. Front and rear side panels got a slightly different design stamped in, different tail lights, different design stamped into the outer tailgate skin, different outer skin on hood, different front end design, headlights, grille, etc.
Mostly a cosmetic refresh to the same truck, with updates/changes to safety tech, the radio, etc.

Just realized the 38 gallon gas tank on the 2020 vs. the 26 gallon tank on the ‘07 must be the difference in numbers……couldn’t stop thinking about it…..
