I have a 2021 F-150 XLT. My payload is 1860 ponds. I would like to know what you Tundra owners are getting. I am thinking of trading in and getting payload numbers from the Toyota website is not easy.

The domestics have a generally higher payload than the tundras.

I definitely wouldn’t trade a 2-3 yr old truck in if I were you. One, your interest rate is lower than anything you will see right now. Two, you’re smack in the middle of the painful part of the depreciation curve. You’ll be burning cash for no good reason. Three the truck you have is a pretty decent vehicle. The 3.5 eco boost has plenty of power and you’re not gaining anything by switching to the Tundra except from “possible” longer term reliability and resale. The jury is out on those things at the moment without any longer term evidence.

Is that 1,860# payload number the one listed on the yellow sticker on the drivers side door jam of your truck, or is that the payload listed online?

Very good points...and I believe he owns a vehicle dealership or two. Let that sink in a little.

GVWR - door jamb payload (the "occupants and cargo" number) should give you your exact curb weight. The problem is, Toyota doesn't print each truck's actual available payload on the door jamb. They estimate it, and in typical Toyota fashion, it's usually lower than reality. People are finding out that Toyota has hamstrung that number.

GVWR - payload = curb weight. Using my truck as an example: 7200 - 1270 = 5930. That's what my curb weight should be, according to the door jamb. I modded my truck with skids, a retractable bed cover, LT tires, a dual battery setup, etc, so I never did check what my actual curb weight is.

But if you haven't modded your new truck yet, you can check that by weighing your bone stock truck with a full tank of gas without anyone in it (note: this is actual curb weight): GVWR - curb weight from the CAT scale = actual payload.

    • Remember that gas in the fuel tank is neither an occupant nor cargo.
    • Part of what makes the 2.5gen payload so low is that it assumes a full 38gal fuel tank.

Some 3rd gen owners have done exactly this and found that their payload number is 200-250 lbs off, because their actual curb weight is lower than the printed GVWR minus the printed payload number on the door jamb. For example, a truck that says 1300 on the door jamb may actually have 1500-1550 lb of available payload until the printed GVWR on the door jamb is reached.

One or two 2/2.5 gen owners checked their trucks as well with the same story (more available payload than the door jamb says).

All that to say, I've never seen a 3rd gen with 1800 lb. Would I never ever put 1800 lb in my bed on occasion if needed? Also no.

My past 2018 lariat was 1666 payload. After the tank was at 1/2 those leafsprings were painfull.
Think maybe a f250 would suit you better?
I also agree right now interest rates are bad and depreciation sucks.
    Good luck and happy Thanksgiving

If payload in a 1/2 ton is of concern, don't buy a Tundra.

We were quoted 5.49% the other day from Toyota Canada after applying a discount of 1% on a 48 month term. Still a lot but not as bad as 8.99% that seems to be what some dealerships are offering at the moment up here in Sunny Vancouver.
