So, I just completed the 30K service at my local stealorship.

I was summoned to the service advisor who stated that the technician advised that I replace the PCV valve ($490) and clean the fuel system ($380). I declined.

Question: Is it advisable to replace the PCV valve on a milage based schedule? Will not doing so affect the warranty?

    Thanks

At 30,000 miles, I can assure you, you do not need either service.

Fuel system cleaning service is a scam at any age/mileage.

PCV should be checked for proper function but not likely bad at stated mileage. Watch YouTube for maintenance check procedure. Clean your own fuel system with two cans of Berryman's B12 chemtool in a half tank of fuel every 25k. Fuel injector cleaning after about 200k for best performance.

I had one put in my wife’s Subaru 2 years ago at the dealership and it was $59 for part and labor. So $490 is extreme.

Even if you did need the PCV valve, the price is a rip. The PCV valve costs about $30 at the parts counter and can be swapped in 15 minutes.

I change my pVC valves every couple of years on my vehicles. They are so cheap they it's not worth reinstalling a used one.

About 2 weeks after I bought my 14 tundra elsewhere, took mine in for an oil change. My local dealer also wanted to charge me $579 to replace the pcv, plus 500 for spark plugs, 350 for front/rear/transfer case oil, 300 fuel treatment, 30 each for 2 marker lights(still haven't found any burnt out)and license plate light, and probably more im forgetting. I bought oem Toyota pcv for 15 on Amazon and it took me longer to find the right socket than actually replace the damn thing. Heartland Toyota of Bremerton service department is a bunch of crooks.

Dealer charges so much because the book states to remove the intake manifold, which is I think 4hr time.

Intake does not need to be removed.

    PCV - $24.99
    22mm socket
    10 minutes max time.

Changed mine at 130k (Purchased at 120k) in my drive way before going to work. Old still functioned, but a rear main seal leak alerted me to change it. No more leak.

    Too many, but not enough....
Pcv valve is like 4 dollars from Toyota. I change it every 25k on all my vehicles. If it saves you .005 mpg it still paying for itself in fuel alone.

Local dealership left a VM. They offered me a full synthetic oil change for $14.95. I am certain they were just inticing me to come so they could try to sell me some other bullshit. Air filters at the least. They tried to get me in once for steering rack recall. Checked my VIN and no recalls. Dealerships make their money off little old ladies and women.

God, please don’t take this wrong, because stories like this absolutely make my blood boil. Hear me out…

I am in construction sales, yet consider myself to be very honest and will 100% do my best to save a customer money.

But!!! If I get the job done faster than expected, should I discount the price? What about if the job takes longer than it was supposed to? Not many customers want to hear that they need to pay more than expected…. Some jobs are quoted on a Time & Materials basis, with a not-to-exceed price. Totally fine, we both know this coming in. Obviously, a small buffer is added in case the job goes a little over. It makes it fair. The ones that irk me is when I competitively bid a project and then the want to make it T&M, NTE that price. That ain’t right, because it relieves all risk from their end, but not mine. It isn’t fair, so I don’t accept the terms. Almost like ordering dinner, eating it, then dickering on the price when the bill is delivered…

Again, don’t over think my thoughts here. Dealerships are notorious for quoting “book” prices, and I’m assuming that a lot of these jobs are done in well under the time that the book says. Does the service tech get paid 4 hours for the 20 minute job? Does he later get paid 2 hours for a job that went a little sideways and took 5 hours?

Or is the dealer fucking the customer on book rates and paying the tech hourly?

In the end, it’s always smart to learn about our trucks and handle what you can on your own. Spark plugs? $100 in plugs and 30 minutes in the garage. That ain’t a $500 job…. But when you have things beyond your capabilities, it is worth finding a private mechanic that you trust with your vehicle and believe that he has your best interest at heart. I’m fortunate to have a longtime friend that owns a very reputable shop in town. I knew him as Landcruiser Dan for a lot of years before I actually knew his last name…. He ain’t cheap, but he does it right.

This is scary. I went to my Toyota dealer 2 weeks ago and purchased a brand new OEM PCV valve and I believe it was $12. I processed to drive home, remove the old one and install the new unit in 20 minutes. I could see this being a $29-$39 job but at this price, I would stop doing business with this dealer and leave them a poor Yelp and Google review.

You ARE fortunate. And "does it right" is all I ever hoped for in mechanic. Or anyone else.

It reminds me of the sign you sometimes used to see in repair shops: "You can get it done cheap, you can get it done fast, or you can get it done right. Pick one." ;)

I think most dealers charge a 1 hour minimum. I know from getting the free oil changes that they don't on air filters but probably because the truck is already in the shop. When they pulled mine and showed it to me the price was $30. Of course I passed on their air filters.

The service dept is clueless...the parts department is polar opposite. Parts dept are very knowledgeable and will take the time to find and cross reference parts.
