    Hi all,

I recently picked up this new to me 2018 tundra. I discovered it had a dent on the side of the tailgate that the salesmen obviously didn’t mention. Is this something I can remove on my own If so, how?

Look midpoint at the taillight, there and up.

OP, I wouldn’t be too worried about it. If it was new maybe. Just me though

Hmm, may be able to get a dentless guy who is good to make it less visible.

    Welcome.

I wouldn't try to do anything to that on my own. I'd only make it worse. I would just head out to a good body shop and get a quote, then decide if it's worth it. For me, it would be, as that would drive me nuts.

Looks like a crease? Try your local body shop. Not sure if dent removal company can fix that. The body shop might have other methods or an in house dent removal guy.

Ouch that sucks, sorry you missed that.

Looks like a crease, not sure how well that can be fixed and if bending it back won't weaken the metal.
But I am no body guy, just mechanical heh.

I know the feeling, my 2014 has several small barely noticeable dimples in the tailgate from when I bought it in Feb 2020.

Every time I notice them, I say I'm gonna call a paintless dent guy.

    I never do lol.
Not sure it's worth the money.

I also recently noticed I have severe passenger rear rocker panel rash from idk where or when :frusty:

Pretty sure that was NOT there when I bought the truck.

I might look into getting that fixed cause it looks really bad.

I would probably leave it. You run the risk of cracking the paint if you mess with it. Not that noticeable.

I cannot tell from the photo. I’d ask that you open the tailgate and snap pics that might show any damage that will require traditional body work.
If it is just a dent in the sheet metal and the finish is intact, you may be able to have a PDR repair, or straighten yourself if you have the basic tools.

If anyone is interested, I'm going to be selling my tailgate real soon (local pickup in AL only). Installed an ARE DCU twin-door bed cap that eliminates the tailgate. Not a scratch or scuff on it. Sunset Bronze Mica.

I had a nasty Arnold Palmer line drive golf ball sized dent on a compound curved section of my 124 Abarth rear quarter panel. Local PDR guy came to the house and in about an hour fixed it to where I can't find it. $200+ 20 tip.

I had a dent like that on my F150 and it was around $800 to repair (in pre-pandemic dollars). That tailgate was aluminum, which the body shop said was harder to work with, and so I assume that means a bit more labor/money. Or you could just flatbed your truck, which would be my firm recommendation.

Putting on a flat bed is a great idea, for very certain and limited applications. It also isn’t very cost effective. Be way cheaper to have PDR done.

Personally, I’d leave it and drive the hell out of it. Look closer next time and don’t blame the salesman. He might not have even noticed it. Maybe he did. Caveat emptor.

Tis a truck! Relax, this dent will make all the rest a whole bunch easier. Who knows, might even prevent an assault charge at some point!

Did you buy a used truck sight unseen? Bc that’d be pretty dumb.

Otherwise, you didnt inspect the truck at all, which is also pretty dumb.

Live and learn, you’ll get the next one right.

I pretty much bought mine sight unseen. Though I did test drive and look it over when I got there. But my dealer was great. Salesman noticed some paint missing on the door edge where the prior owner must have hit the side of his garage or something and just flat out they took another $125 off the price just for that before I even got there. I guess that's the price of the door edge guards. I'm just going to use some touch up paint and not worry about it.

Just hit up PDR around your area and see what kind of quotes you get. You might find some reasonable quotes. And just know cheapest isn’t always the best way to go. That dent would bug the shizz outta me lol just my .02
