    Hello

I'm a long way from needing a coolant change, but I walked past the antifreeze section at the local store and started wodering:

Is there actually something different about manufacturer-specific antifreezes? There are jugs for GM vehicles, Fords, Toyotas, and some others (all "OEM" brand). And then there's one that says works for all of them (Prestone). Of course the Toyota one is pink. I can't tell what colour the Prestone is.

Is it just marketing and they're really all the same thing?

I miss the days when antifreeze was antifreeze, it was green and the only two options were "premixed" or "concentrate" :)

Pink is OAT (Organic Acid) whereas red is IAT (Inorganic Acid). Pink coolant has a longer service life than red coolant. Pink also has better corrosion inhibitors for aluminum and the phosphates in it are much more effective in protecting the water pump from corrosion after a cavitation event.

@Danman34 he said it best without getting geek-out technical. Basically that’s the conclusion that all my reading came down to
