Anybody every experience this? At low speeds turning in either direction sounds like a popping sound???

Usual culprit is Cv axles binding. Remove and replace

Going to Riverside Toyota to get fixed. Thanks for the input and after sending a video of it to a few of my yota mechanics they confirmed it’s the driver side CV axle.

Update; so I replaced both CV axles 2 weeks ago at Toyota of Riverside (dropped $2k for parts and labor), I asked the master tech if they where bad and they said no, the are good. Just a small tear on the passenger side boot and that’s....

the noise never went away and at some points seemed like it got worse. I was up in Shaver lake for work, by Wagner Campground, heading down the mountain from work to my hotel. I was recording the sounds as I was driving because it was so quiet you can hear everything and anything. I was going 20mph and all of sudden there was a huge crunch and the whole front end shook and came to a stop. As I was trying to get to the shoulder it was just piercing metal on metal screeching at 1mph trying to get to a dirt shoulder.

I had no service, pitch black In The mountains. My work never heard for me so they called for a search and rescue with the sheriffs and they got to me at 0400 the next morning.

after a week of my truck being at the shop and transferred to multiple shops in Clovis they decided to do a test drive and had the same thing happen and shortly after heard what seemed like a rock dislodge from some where in the tire.

They put the truck on the lift, took the tires off and took apart the breaks and found lots of small rocks lodged in the break assembly. Since then the noise went away.

hopefully that’s it. I’m driving back home from Fresno and so far so good.

Wow that’s a heck of a story! Hope all is well after all of that. So in reality, you didn’t need to replace the CV axles, it was just some Little Rock’s lodged into the brake assembly? Too bad, but not a bad thing to have new CV axles.

Interesting read. I'm actually having this exact same issue. I get one or two pops from the drivers side. Forward or reverse.

That’s true! I never thought of that. Can you “rebuild” a cv axle or does it just wear out and get replaced?

ftom what I’ve learned is that you can replace the boots but the actual axle would loose teeth and would have to be replaced, no rebuilding from my understanding

Okay...I was hoping it was rebuildable, to where you could replace guts (that I guess don’t exist) with higher strength parts for a more durable cv axle.

I finally got around to diagnosing mine tonight. The bolts on the back of my TRD skid plate were ever so slightly loose, and it was binding against the cross member.

i had also tighten up my skid plate and it took away from some of the noise I had as well. But most of it came from rocks in my break calibers LOL. Damn off roading issues

Update. Just got around to replacing my rotors and this was the cause of my noise/issue I had. The lift shop only hand tighten my bolts before putting the rotors on. One of the bolts completely backed out and eventually broke through the rotor. That’s what completely stopped me at 25mph in a turn. What royally pisses me off is the fact that the lift shop replaced my front suspension and didn’t say anything about it. The other 2/3 bolts left on where hand tight only and worn out. I’m. It gonna bash the company on here. But be careful with who you choose and listen to people.

PSA: Those who have the TRD skid, RCI aftermarket skids, or presumably others have a thread about the popping while turning...

simple fix for me i cut up bike tubes and made "spacers or washers" out of them and placed them in between all contact points between skids and frame and my truck has been silent since.

I'm waiting on delivery of some skids for my cats (already have the TRD plate), and I bought the little rubber washers in anticipation, but it looks like I need that stripping. Big thanks for sharing this!
