I can’t find anything on this site or the rest of the internet. But I’m pretty ignorant to car audio in general.

I’m good at navigating menus though. And I definitely can’t find any setting for screen brightness.

can you turn the screen brightness down on these things? It’s blinding at night.

Looks like the dimmer isn’t adjustable. You can turn off the display if it’s that bright, or maybe put a tint over the screen?

I haven’t dealt with this model, but here is what someone said on a Ram forum.

“there are TWO settings that change the screen brightness. One is in the menu as “Brightness.” The other is in the menu as “Backlight.” I discovered that the brightness setting really didn’t dim it much, but the backlight setting really knocked it down to where I could barely see it.”

this looks to be on page 63.

I just installed an Alpine unit in my daughters car for Christmas and there was no dimming wire for headlights like most other units. I guess it uses a sensor on the front of the unit to detect night and auto dims that way.

They also said on that forum that many people use the wrong dimming wire? So check that if your big complaint is too bright at night with lights on.

This is super helpful thank you so much! I'm definitely curious about the dimming wire. It sounds like it should dim when the headlights come on? Very cool.

Yes, there should be a wire that hooks up to your factory harness. It tells the radio when your lights come in so it knows to dim the lights on the radio.

Page 93 shows the electrical wiring. Should be the Orange/White wire with “ILLUMI” label on it.

It's probably a menu setting. Check page 65, set dimmer to "sync".

Page 63 of your manual addresses screen brightness, contrast, etc. in the setup section. That doesn't work?

You guys are amazing. Can't wait till it gets dark tonight to confirm if I can make it work via software with the 'sync' button on page 65. Maybe that just needs to be turned on.
If not, tomorrow I'll get into the harness and see if I have the ILLUMI wire hooked up correctly.

Seriously thank y'all so much I was super lost. I owe y'all pizza and beer.

Alright so I’m working on this now. It looks like the installer may have tried to hook up the orange illuma wire? This bundle of yellow and orange wires are coming over from the head unit. The orange wire tires into this blue wire that goes through the firewall. The yellow wire taps into a small gauge teal wire.

Any hints? The head unit never seemed to auto adjust before. I don’t think the orange wire is hooked up correctly.

Did they use the idatalink maestro radio adapter harness? TO2 or TO3?

Then there’s no reason he had to run those two extra wires. Unless they are for something else. On the TO2 harness there is a dimmer wire already. That dimmer wire will tie into the jcv dimmer wire. I’m not sure why your installer ran the extra wires.

take a look at this photo. On the TO2 harness, the Illumination wire is Orange. The Illumination wire on the jvc/kenwood is Orange/White. These two connects together.

I was wrong on those wires. They were run by another installer for my ditch lights that connect at the switch panel below the climate controls.

This is what I’m looking at on the back of the HU. Any idea where I would begin troubleshooting? I don’t see an orange wire going into the maestro!

Ok I’m piecing this together bit by bit. They didn’t use all the wires. The first photo shows a bundle that was tied off. The second photo shows the orange and white wire coming out of the HU. Final photo shows the orange wire from the maestro. Looks prepped and everything. Odd huh? So I’m guessing that orange and white wire is cut somewhere in that bundle. Not sure if I want to go to the trouble to undo that.
For starters, I only have bigger wire on hand. Like 12ga or something haha

*edit* it’s weird to me that the orange and white wire isn’t with this bunch I unraveled.

You have to unravel the tape and get to the wires. Then connect them together.

OK! Got it. It was just coiled up way back in there. So I’ll strip this and finish crimping it! So far so good. Let’s see if it actually makes the screen flicker… I asked James at tech12volt if he’d heard of that phenomenon and he said never. Here’s to hoping!

Easy fix. Plus there’s a butt connector already there. This should fix the issue.

So what was the outcome? Did it work last night?

reading from your post yesterday did the installer just forget to hook up the orange and orange/white wires?

Last night was the first night I was able to test. Oddly enough, I don't think it's working. No noticeable change in screen brightness when turning the headlights off/on. No flicker either though!

Think there's anything on the maestro to2 side of things that wasn't plugged in / set up correctly?

Here’s my finding. The dimming function will only dim the buttons and accent light located beneath the screen. That’s it. The main screen will NOT dim when headlights are ON.
You can manually change the brightness from the main screen. Must be on any Source screen to change. Hit Function button. Pick Screen Adjust option at the top of screen. You can make it brighter or darker.
