It was suggested on another thread that someone should start a thread aimed specifically at post long block replacement experiences. I thought it was a good idea.

I'd ask that we limit posts to only those who have had their engine swapped, and any specific questions relating to their experiences.

    Thanks

Maybe if possible, drop the name of the dealer? In case it’s a good experience and job done right, we can choose that dealer for our replacement.

I wish I could edit the title to include the word "Experiences" at the end.

Perhaps one of the moderators could do that? Please.

Reiterating what I posted in the 'Tundra engine recall - interesting news post'...

I got mine back from the motor replacement last week. Only about 200 miles on the new unit so far.

Took 3 days and when it was returned to me, I was surprised the truck was completely detailed inside and out, as clean or cleaner than the day I purchased it.

Took a while for the new engine smell to burn off. Rides/drives as before, no rattles, squeaks, etc.. Just running thru the break in process again before tow season starts.

They gave me a Tundra loaner to drive for the 3 day job...

Crestmont Toyota - Pompton Plains, NJ

2022, SR5, Sport DC, 26Kmiles, MFG 12-21, no previous issues, pavement pounder, used for towing 5,000 to 6,500 pound toy-hauler.

Can we add to the post year, miles, did you experience any issues with the old motor?

Subscribed as well. Thanks for doing this. Will share my experience here once I go through the recall.

Also in the owners manual it has break in procedures when any new engine or transmission is in installed. Most notably no towing first 500 miles with new engine.

Just called the dealer in SE PA today. He said they are still doing the "broke down" tundras in the first phase of the recall. The next phase starts at the end of the month and then the next phase in march. He wasn't sure the manufacture date range for the next phase but said he would call me back next week with an update. My truck was manufactured 8/2022.

My engine is being ordered on Thursday. I stopped in at the dealer who is doing the job to talk to them, the gal in charge of this has a well organized plan for her Master Mechanic, she even showed me her spreadsheet and calendar/schedule. Very transparent. Stapp Interstate Toyota Frederick CO. They have some sweet old land cruisers on display also. A 40 series with a plow on it! I will update through the process.

I hope you have a better experience with Stapp than I did at my 10K service. I specifically asked for a tire rotation to be included. When they notified me the work was complete, I immediately noticed the tire that I had marked with chalk in advance was still in the same location. When I complained, I was told all the techs were at lunch, and it would be another 2 hours before they could do the rotation. That was after I had already been there for 3-1/2 hours. Screw that, I chose to do the rotation myself.

Before I left, I checked the engine compartment and oil drain plug as I always do. Sure enough, the tech had forgotten to re-install the oil filler cap. That could have been bad.

I won't be using Stapp again for anything.

    Ok, thread back on track.

    2022 Sr5, 4x4, DC, almost 88k miles, never any issues (that I didn't cause...)

I got my truck back today. Dropped it off Monday at 9 am and received a call it was done 10 am Wednesday , this was for the engine, fuel tank, tonneau, EPB, I also have the replace both drive belts and 12 qts flush on the transmission.

A big shout-out for Santa Fe Toyota and the Master Technician Charles. I didn't want the experience but it was great. Loaner kinda sucked (I don't like cars) a '25 Rav4 awd hybrid, great car, 40 mpg+, but not a full size truck.

Charles did about a 15 mile road test, I did some small trips in town after picking it up this am and then a 140 mile round trip on rural 2 Lane highway (including 17-18 of dirt washboard), the truck is as good or better than new. As the others reported it is definitely smoother, power is awesome, mpg is as good if not better (weird for a 'brand new' engine, but same weather, driver, route, etc.) I think as Breathing Borla questioned that slowly Toyota has made improvements and the engine calibration is a bit different and really some NVH stuff, when it was running on direct injection it for sure was smoother and quieter this am in a balmy 8 degrees.

I need some more time than just a day but everything is awesome so far. Toyota stood up as a company, I am happy with the results.

Yep, same here. Called the dealer earlier this week and said the same, that they were currently only ordering engines for those that had seized up. On one hand I guess I get it. They likely don’t have enough engines to just start swapping out for everyone in the recall. However, as I explained to the guy it’s just really frustrating because I tow a camper, and the thought of the truck just dying on me while in transit is really concerning. But again, I know their hands are tied.

And I thought this was a long block story related to Toyota's new V8 long block. Kidding. One day someone will get a long block and install a V8 into the G3.

I have a separate thread on this too.

Go down this rabbit hole (or yellow brick road) with me in this detailed description of my experience. I'll be responding to any questions and also updating this original post with edits that'll show dates, etc.

22 limited, Feb 22 build with 41k miles. No engine problems to date, so I was hesitant to accept the new engine. I love my truck, even with the annoyances. My dealer (Rancho Santa Margarita Toyota in Ca) has an ultra modern revamped service department. Their techs are amazing, so I waited till they did four or five, then I had them put me on the list.

In two weeks, they received the engine and called me last Friday (Jan 24th). I dropped it off Tuesday morning the 28th. They did the fuel line permanent repair concurrently. Took only three business days in total which surprised me. I picked it up yesterday, Jan 30th in the early evening.

I was concerned about how much they would have had to disassemble the body to get at it, but when I got it back it seemed to look the same as before (same engine cover, everything in place) , and there were new hoses. (BTW, The paperwork details the old and new engine serial numbers). Anyway, there was no oily or gas smell as one usually notices with major engine work which I had expected. In addition, they did a minor detail on it. No doggie hair, no dust, body shining. Nice.

I asked what they disassembled and the answer surprised me. Apparently they only needed to remove the hood and a few other minor parts to get it in the engine bay. They had test driven it 20 miles after reconnecting everything. I know because I could see on the app everywhere they drove it.

I've driven it about 30 miles. Runs PERFECT. Also, there's ZERO throttle delay, but I can't really test it yet. I'll be taking it easy for a few weeks, then I'll punch it here and there and advise. Meantime, I'll be adding only premium when I fill it up today (at an eighth of a tank right now because I didn't want the tech to deal with a full tank). I'll monitor the mileage which was previously about 16 combined (13 city, about 18 highway unless in a straight line at a steady70mph (like going to Vegas) where I'd average about 20mpg.. but that's rare since even freeway driving in So Cal had a lot of speed variations, hence the 17-18 range on the freeway.

I'll be checking for leaks, watching for errors from reconnected systems, monitoring mileage, and noting every behavior for you guys. No leaks this morning, running perfectly

Meantime, if you live in So Cal, especially Orange County, I urge you to try Santa Margarita Toyota for this replacement. My service advisor is Karmen Cedarstaff. She's amazing. The dealer has the most modern upgraded service department I've ever seen.. they just upgraded about 2 years ago. Their new phone system is automated, but run with it.. it's worth it.

    Questions?

Rancho Santa Margarita Toyota ask for Karmen. See my post on this thread about my experience or the separate thread that I made. My experience has been nothing short of amazing. Super modern service department. Outstanding technicians. Was able to do this engine swap out plus the fuel line recall in about three working days. Truck runs perfectly

I remember that story, didn't remember jumps or deep water. He had pic of himself fording about 12"-18" of water if memory serves. Again, if memory serves, Toyota refused his claim, but his personal insurance picked it up.

But it sounds like we agree, the 3rd gen "would be more interesting" with a V8 option.

still waiting for mine to be done, they said the gaskets still haven't arrived yet as per the instructions. Replaced the engine already but won't released my truck due to the gaskets are not there. Anyone happen to have any insight? I'm in the SE region (Arlington Toyota in Jackonville FL)

What "gaskets"? If the engine has already been replaced...??
