I had the message all day, even after shutting the truck off and restarting. This morning I go out and start the truck and the message is gone. I guess I'll wait and see if it comes back. Spoke with my Toyota dealer service advisor and he had no idea. ???

Id probably take it into dealer and have them scan the computer, even if it went away. It should have a stored code if it cleared itself. Want them to at least have a record of it happening, so it if happens again and same code they have something to follow.

Had it come up once when the truck stalled out in a parking lot during a tight (& fast) turn. That was around 5k or 6k miles. Hasn't happened since. I'm at about 13k miles now.

On a side note: The 2022 Tundra steering system is a "fly-by-wire" type of system. Your steering wheel isn't directly connected to the steering rack via a steering box & shaft. It's more efficient than old hydraulic-assisted steering but more complicated. You move the wheel which tells a computer to moving the steering rack.

The error code will be stored in the ECM module so they'll be able to pull the history when you take it in.

The tundra still not that advanced yet. :( It has steering shaft connecting the steering wheel to the steering rack. It just electronic power steering not hydraulic.

That's good to know. I guess I'll find the article that talked about the electronic steering system for 2022 and send a correction. haha. They equated it to fly-by-wire and that wheel feedback is simulated. I guess you can't believe everything you read on the internet. lol

I have an appointment with the dealer to check it out on Tuesday. We will see if anything comes out of it. Still no repeat of the error message.

Just happened to me. Low speed driving through town. Nothing crazy. Steering is not affected at all. I will take it in to dealer tomorrow morning cause i am on shift tonight. Hoping it erases itself by then.

I have the same system in my venza(2013), never had this sort of warning or message pop up. Feels like normal steering.

Boy, these new tundras just keep on giving...messages :)

I've got this truck in January 2022. I live in the South (AL) and was planning to give this to my father within 3 years and he live in the North (MI). I've experience this issue multiple times already and this time is the last time I am willing to let the brand new truck (with 2,658 miles in) that cry's power steering malfunction for the last time. I'm taking a lost but I'm selling it and not waste my time and worry about it in the long run or potential issue that may cause an accident driving down the highway because Toyota is not addressing this issue (software or hardware). I've also got my rearview mirror replaced because it will sag down within 3-5 days. Yes, I know there's a digital but I like to use the standard mirror but this shouldn't of happen either way. See below for the summary of my visits to the service department.

1st visit: power steering malfunction notice came on during end of Jan or early Feb (cold-ish weather month). Went to the dealership and they reset it and said nothing to worry. Went home thought everything was fixed.

2nd visit: truck got towed to Toyota. Service guy told me the bad news. The power steering rack has to be replace. I was like sure let's do it and hoping that it will resolve it. Except the fact that it only take one month in the shop (some states if a vehicle is out of service for 30 days it is consider as a lemon per regulation). Power steering rack got replaced and system reprogram. This was around Feb. or Mar. timeframe.

3rd visit: Truck was in the shop for one week 10/7/2022-10/15/2022. They reprogram the system and if the light comes on again they will have to replace the rack again. I have my suspicion, if it's a hardware issue (i.e., power steering rack) then it should resolved the issue once it was replaced in the 1st time around. What are the chance of having two bad power steering rack and it whole unit.

Warning light came on again today (10/18/2022), current temperature where I'm at is 42 degree.

Summary: I've noticed the warning only comes on and have steering issue during cold start and only when the temperature drops to the 30s or low 40s degree. I can put money on it that when the temperature rises later on in the afternoon, the warning will disappear and the power steering will be working properly again. Living in the South I have no problem with it durning warmer weather months but if this truck goes to the North that is 6+ months out of commission. I'm not a programmer or a mechanic but I know a little or two about software and programming. If this is a programming issue, this shouldn't happen durning cold start as software don't care about temperature. This also means the software has to implemented across all Toyota not just my vehicle/few trucks. Plus, it takes time for software developer to update their program. If it is a software issue then why it is not a recall on it already for everyone to have their truck to update their software. This is a hardware issue somewhere else not on the rack that cause the lost of communication durning cold temperature. I hope this helps those that is dealing with this issue. My trust in Toyota has gone down the drain.

Welcome to the forum, and I guess also "goodbye" (since you're selling the truck). Sorry this was your first post here.

I was having a little trouble following your post, but if I catch the gist of it...I would pursue action via a lemon lawyer before outright selling. Especially, if as you say, you're going to take a loss on it. If it qualifies, and you win your lemon case, it will help mitigate your loses.

    All the best to you.

Just wanted to give an update about the power steering issue related to this thread. Apparently I purchased the Tundra that ktundra2022 was having issues with and sold. I reached out to him with no reply, but based on his issue and the service records, everything matches. This is also the only place I’ve found that has posted anything about this particular issue. I bought the truck from a local dealership in AL and was told there was a power steering issue that needed to be corrected before delivery. I wrongfully assumed it was something minor, but was later told the entire rack was being replaced. It was no big deal to me because I was a current Toyota owner and have owned Toyotas in the past with no issues. To make a long story short, after the rack was replaced and the truck was delivered the same power steering warning come back on. I confronted the GM of the dealership about the issue being a known issue with this particular truck and was told they would make it right whether with this truck or getting me a new one. The dealership got their regional rep involved and ultimately I was told the issue was traced to a plug that was not connected from the factory. The GM said there was two power sources for the power steering, a primary and a secondary. Apparently a wire from the secondary power source was the problem. I’m not a mechanic and don’t know anything about the new system. All I know is I really like this truck, have driven it a few weeks since the repair and after a couple of weekend trips there are no issues. Hopefully this problem isn’t a big one, but maybe this post will help someone else out.

Yes, that appears to be the case with most people who’ve had the problem. Unfortunately my vehicle would clear the warning, but it would always come back.

Your engine shut off for another reason. Since the steering is electric, you get this warning when then engine shuts off abnormally.

So far the shop can’t find around the battery why there was electrical smoke and no errors. The area toyota rep will be here on Wednesday to look at it. I hope something is figured out.

Is this system purely an electric motor system?
Are any hydraulic fluids or pumps involved at all?
