I'm having a problem getting my truck out of 4lo. sometimes it makes a grinding noise, or if I'm in drive but truck won't move, like it's in neutral. I don't have turning it to 4hi or 4lo. only when getting out of 4lo. any input for this? thanks.

Time to look into the 4lo actuator motor. Likely gummed up. There's some great threads on rebuilding them if you search a bit.

You follow the steps in the manual? Driveline binding is the most likely culprit followed by a faulty actuator. If you don't use the 4WD often, the actuators can be a little sticky. Good idea to "exercise" it once a month or so. Make sure you are on flat ground if possible and the wheels straight. Roll a few feet to help sync the driveline components. Put the truck in neutral and push the 4lo button to disengage. Let off the brake. If it doesn't disengage, put it into D or R and let off the brake, then reapply the brake and put back into neutral. If none of that seem to help, put in park and get under the truck and tap the transfer case. If nothing seems to work, then an actuator change or maintenance is likely needed.

Shot in the dark - you didn’t use the Toyota 75w oil?

    What year?

I believe the transfer case changed completely from 14 to 15.

    EDIT: Nevermind. I remembered wrong!

2014 was the first year of the BW case that requires the different oil.

Coming out of 4 low can be a bit temperamental at times. Make sure that you are completely stopped and on flat ground and in Neutral when you disengage. You may have to switch back and forth between hi and low a couple times to get it to disengage. The owner's manual says that you should put the truck into both 4 hi and 4 low at least once a month and drive it a short distance to keep everything properly lubricated. Just don't use 4 low on paved roads. It's not good for it.

Mine got stuck in 4-low yesterday, probably because I don't use that very often. I actually have not used 4-hi for probably 9 months either. I parked it over night and the lower temps (around 45F) may have helped a bit. I went back out today and drove up the road and back, put it in reverse, put it back in drive a couple of cycles. Eventually I was able to get it to go up into 4-hi and then subsequently into 2wd. I am due for a transfer case oil change which is first on my list tomorrow.

I think from now on I will make sure that I cycle through the three positions at least every month or so. I don't have a manual for mine so I wasn't aware of the need to do that. I appreciate the suggestions in this thread! Thanks!

Also not good for it in 4hi unless you just drive in a straight line with no turns.
