We have all seen this video (or some clip of it):

    https://youtube.com/shorts/7Zrb0cs6XfA?si=lvOQNYpnWO3lHR3e

Well today I had a front row seat and watched it happen.

    Conditions:

    -light snow flurries
    -accelerating to 65 mph
-CAT track steer loaded improperly (counterweight to the back) on a small trailer.
    -F-250 tow rig.

At around 60 mph his trailer started to sway pretty good. Everyone backed off and gave him space. The guy needed it (and most likely a change of underwear). He ended up spinning out with the trailer out front and upside down with the skid steer still attach to it. Truck was still in all four tires but badly damaged.

I snapped a pic in the way back from a site. The wrecker company sent out the big boy to right this trailer/skid steer combo.

I think so. Driver had a "I seen a ghost" look on his face as I passed by.

It slowed down traffic so much though and caused two secondary accidents that looked pretty bad.

Jim @Jim LE 1301 posted this today from what he seen yesterday. That is a dually Ford F450 and it still happened. Hell...landscaping and hauling is their business. Just because you have a big truck doesn't mean you can just ignore physics.

So in both instances, skid steer loaded too far rearward and/or counterweight to the rear?
(Should have been backed up the trailer and farther forward?)

Yerp, under the right... errr, wrong conditions, a fairly small trailer can toss a fairly big truck right in the ditch.

That had to be a pretty scary and helpless feeling.

Yes, a skid steer should be loaded in reverse with the counterweight forward.

This is my dump/tractor loaded up. Majority of the weight is over the trailer axles with plenty of pin (tongue) weight.

Yes, even gooseneck trailers can sway.

I was rather impressed as well. Nothing like a 10k lb batting ram bouncing around on the highway.

Once it starts to initially sway on the guy is it already too late? Or is there any corrective action he can take to safely come to a stop and adjust his load?

Nothing yet except for some LED interior & exterior bulbs.
And if you don't have trailer brakes (which depending on your load you may need by law) you can carefully reduce your speed.

Like others have said, apply trailer brakes manually....if you are fast enough.

I had it happen going down a pass many years ago and I grabbed the trailer brakes manually and it stopped. I had to reposition the load.

Best thing to do is prevent it from happening in the first place.
