    Friends,

For those who have or have experience with the plastic OEM bed liner (as pictured below) - would this be a deal-breaker if you were purchasing used?

I've always used (and prefer) the spray on liner (Rhino Lining or similar). However, I've heard (but not seen) that the plastic liners trap water and cause rust.

    Thanks for any advice!

As a dealer, I would pull that sucker out, get it sprayed and throw in a non slip mat.
I avoid those plastic liners like the plague and offer spray ins for the same price.

    My person take however.

My '10 has had a factory liner since new when I bought it, no issues, the rust from liners chafing is something that happened to the trucks in the '80s and '90s, not an issue with current trucks. The drop in liners do a better job of protecting the bed than a spray in can.

    Thanks for all the feedback!

I've never heard of a BedRug but it sounds like I need to check them out.

Mine will be sprayed soon and a thick rubber mat added for extra protection and ease of me crawling around in it...hate the plastic liner

Just pulled the bed-liner out of my month old 2018 this morning. I have an appointment for a Premium Line-X application this coming Monday @ 1:00.

Probably depends where you live. Here in AZ, we have 0 problems with rust. I prefer the drop in because it really does offer more protection from impacts and dents. Yes, I can see paint being rubbed off if I lift it up and can understand how in some climates it could accelerate rust. But in a dry climate, like here, a drop in provides greater protection from dents and dings.[/QUOTE]

Lift up the front and shine your flashlight between the bed and liner. I have a tri fold cover and a bed mat so there’s no leaking in mine

I had a plastic liner in my 2002. I kept rust at bay by spraying oil under it once a year. A couple of years ago I pulled it out, cleaned it up and had Line-x spray the bed. I am much happier with the Line-x premium spray than I was with the drop in.

    Furthermore, Rowdy Ron is cool!

Is this the same type of Bedliner you are saying to get rid of? 707CF432-35BE-4D90-AE0D-AD3466073AA7.jpg707CF432-35BE-4D90-AE0D-AD3466073AA7.jpg

I roll Herculiner on first, then drop in a liner. Prevents chaffing and the liner is perfect for impact resistance ! Done that to the past 3 trucks I've owned and it works like a charm.

I bought my Tundra with a plastic liner. I removed it and inspected the bed before purchasing. It was 6 years old and no signs of rust but there were numerous spots of bare metal. I had it sprayed 2 days after purchase.
Could not even give away the plastic liner.

Just last week I just pulled the factory plastic liner out of the 2000 Silverado we have owned since new. Though it has had a camper top on it all these years.
I pulled the plastic and was honestly pretty nervous. There was not a lick of rust. And only one tiny spot of bare metal.
Had the camper top not been on it for 20 years the result may have been different.
I had it sprayed as well.
The liner is still under my deck.

For those who got rid of their liner and sprayed. Did u get rid of the gaurd on the tailgate or did u put it back on , post spray.
And if u didn't put it back on, did u keep the bolts in while they sprayed? Selling the liner and just want to be sure. Thanks

That went in the trash with the rest of the plastic liner.

Pulled my liner out about 3 months ago. 2016 tundra in CA. Lots of bare metal due to the liner shifting around. Leaves dirt and all kinds of debris were under it also. Didn’t want to wait for rust so had it sprayed with line-x and dropped in a OEM rubber mat. So much happier with the durability. There was also plenty of dents under the cover due to the fact that stuff slides around on the hard plastic when braking turning and accelerating. Not an issue with the rubber mat or linex. I can put item on the mat and they stay put. Huge plus not hearing everything slam into the front of the bed after a quick stop.

I have a 2001 that still has the original bedliner in it, but it is about to come out. It is warped and ugly and traps stuff under it. I bought it with it in about a year or so ago.

I can show you on an almost 14 year truck with some really bad rust spots. Give me a moment to find my posts. I'm leaving the liner in so I don't have to look at the rust reminding me. I'm not spending the money to try to fix it either.

A lot of the rust issues with Tundras come from on the underside of the bed eating it's way into the bed, not starting from between the plastic liner and bed. I can attest to that with my truck.

Probably have made up your mind but I have an 08 with a factory plastic bedliner and let me tell you it has been through a lot. All kinds of hydraulic oil, air compressors that trap wet leaves all summer, and only taken it out once to clean under it. That’s 13 years! No rust of course which is amazing to me because in this part in Arkansas, the mud is about 99.99% clay, therefore it sticks and doesn’t come off. To make a long story short, I wouldn’t worry about a plastic bedliner. Just make sure to keep that engine howlin to knock all the water out every once in a while!:mudding::burnrubber:
