Hello all! So the unfortunate happen when pulling off my roof top tent in the garage. it dropped off the lift and scrapped on the driver side bed panel. I am super lucky it didn’t do worse. The truck is 2021 tundra sr5 with the super white paint.

I’ve gotten a few quotes from some local body shops near me and have some confusion about it and questions. Some of the body shops have said they would need to strip down all the clear coat on the whole panel and then paint the affected area and then apply the whole side again with clear coat (Pretty expensive).

However my confusion is that I remember the super white paint is a stage one paint where the two are mixed and then just sprayed, as in no additional clear coat on top unlike with other colors that are a stage two paint (base color then clear coat) right? I remember this from when having my 2017 Tacoma which was also super white paint. My local dealer doesn’t do any sort of collision repair other than paint correction which is just the pen and send that off to local shops around them which they didn’t give any names when asked and they didn’t know anything about the paint either.

So has anyone ran into this with the super white paint or have more knowledge? Of course I’m trying to stay cheaper, but I also don’t want one side to look more “shiny” then the rest of the truck if they make it like a stage two paint job. I could be wrong on this.

Thanks for your help in advice.

There are guys that make a living with spot repairs. They’re never invisible and if you’re talking about gloss levels not matching being an issue I’d take spot repair off the table. The scratch needs feathered out filled and primed. The entire panel will be scuffed/sanded for adhesion of base and clear on the entire panel. Remove and install bed cap, taillight, bumper, wheel liner, replace of and decal. Or you can practice your touch up skills. Nothing to lose and white is the easiest color. Single stage vs two stage is moot. Even if you found a shop willing to do single stage the difference in material cost is insignificant. They’d both require full refinish for an acceptable appearance.

This is correct, and Toyota recommends when doing paint repairs to replace with standard 2 stage refinishing process. AKA base coat(color) and a clear coat(gloss and protection).

So once you figure to repair the scratch, replace the step pad(most likely will break coming off), remove the taillamp, remove the bumper, replace the clear decal on the bedside, this way there will be no tape lines, like when originally painted. It will add up quickly, if done correctly of course.

So being white, someone could "spot" that area for repair. Then in a few years when that spot repair started to deteriorate it would be harder to see. Once the clear coat gets below a certain thickness like with a blend where you go from full thickness to basically zero thickness it doesn't have enough material to provide the protection needed, and you will get the white faded halo rings, harder to see on a white truck.

Also being white, you can fill the scratch in with your paint pen, using several coats allowing them to dry fully between each coat till you fill in the scratch. Then you could sand with a block flat and level and buff. Will look really good to the average person walking by, and they may never see it, you of course will always be able to pick it out.

Thank you for the information. I may just put a few more coats on it and try that method first and see how it looks. I have never really done much with paint other than so good ol plastic dip stuff, but that's way different. Any suggestions on grit or sanding it? like use the flat block and like wet sand it some?

Yeah it seems to match because my paint is the super white 040. maybe it’s more matte but I only did a enough to cover the spots and I didn’t buff it or anything. I’ll have to take a picture it. So I mean it does stand out a little bit or at least to me lol. Maybe I’ll look at that too. I don’t know about mixing different brands or whatnot.

I would start with 1000, do it wet, then polish as needed
