So I’ve run into a problem with my RetraxPro MX bed cover. The cover is amazing have had it a little under a year and love it. My problem is I never thought I would have any need for a rack. But because of COVID I ended up losing my job and getting into roofing sales and will be needing a rack. Trying to find ways around not having to sell this cover and buying the proXR. Thanks for any info.

I have the XR - I believe the only difference is the rail. Have you contacted Retrax to see if you can buy a set of those separately? I just did a quick look and found these:

Not cheap by any means but they are out there.

Could you get a rack that uses the pocket holes? The ones ontop of the bed rail that you would have to trim the plastic from covering. I know they are still exposed with my tri fold but unsure how exposed they are with your rail system.

I have a co-worker that bought the Retrax, and later bought the track rails. Pretty simple swap...just that you're out the cost of the second set of rails.

XR here as well. I went with Rhino Rack for my crossbars, but have been curious to see if there was some sort of mod to put a track capable cab-height bed rack on top for an outlander tent setup. Crossbars are supposed to hold 220# each, but I don't know what cumulative weight the tracks would hold. As you guys are saying in here, prices for all these things is cray-cray, but I was just curious if I needed to strike an arc, or if someone had something already.

I don't know anything about your rack system but good luck with the new job! I am glad to hear that you were able to find something and keep going. I hope you sell a lot of roofs.

Yakima makes a base for their HD truck rack that works specifically with the retrax track side rails.

I have Retrax XR with the rails, and use the Yakima Overhaul HD system with it. Spring/Summer/Autumn I have a Tepui RTT up there. Works great, solid, no shifting, easily adjustable. With the Retrax rails it's easy to remove as well.

Ya I’m hoping that I won’t have to buy new rails on top of the money to buy a rack too.

Thank you for the kind words. Definitely hard to go from a great steady paycheck to a commission paying job. But I will overcome.

I know it works for the Xr but I don’t have the rails for it. Was thinking something like this may work. But looks like it might be a pain to take on and off.

Voodoo fabrication makes a bracket for their rack that will go around the rails. I’ve seen them used to put a rack over top of a diamondback cover (@Explorer has them on his truck) - don’t see why that same idea wouldn’t work for the retrax.

Saw a video online where the owner of the Yakima Overhaul HD was having issues with the bolts pulling up on the rails of a RetraxPro XR. Here is his video, wondering if you've ever noticed this issue with the rails and your roof top tent (RTT) installed. Wondering if he may have just over torqued the bolts...I'm honestly hoping this is the case cuz I was planning on purchasing the RetraxPro XR and the Yakima Outpost HD system for my RTT.

This attachment to the truck look awesome and seem like it works great. I would just have to figure out how to make it a taller rack as I will need it to be above the can for a long two story ladder. Definitely nice to see someone has put a rack with the Mx thank you.

I may have a solution for you but it might be a pain in the ass. I ordered a Retrax MX Pro in late 2016 for my 2017 Tundra. It had a dent in one of the slats that didn't affect it's use but the sent me a replacement canister anyway.

I have the one with a dent in it boxed up on a shelf in my shed. What I'm thinking is that maybe you can offset the $400 cost of the XR tracks by selling my canister with your MX tracks to somebody with a crew max who would want an amazing deal on a Retrax for their work truck or something.

It's yours if you want it and at least you could cover the cost of the the XR tracks. I live in Central Texas between Bastrop and La Grange.

If anyone is looking for a retrax bed rack, I have a uptopoverland mid height truss for sale. I assembled it but never installed it on the truck and just ordered a ATO atlas camper so won’t be using it. . PM for details if interested as I don’t have enough posts to sell yet.

Sorry, just saw this question. I haven't taken mine off since install, however, judging by how much he rounded that nut on the rear tower, I'd say definitely consider the source here. More than likely an over torque situation. The yakima towers definitely sit on the rail and transfer the load through it, the bolts are there to simply stop the rack from sliding forward and back, and counter any lift that may be associated with the load. I will endeavour to check the rails in the near future.
