So I’m not finding anything and I’ve looked forever but I have an 2022 SR5 TRD Sport and it came with a manual rear view mirror.

Could I wiretap into the forward recognition camera wire harness?

anyone know which wires are the ignition power and ground. I don’t want the radar detector always on.

Such a pain in the ass I pay this much for a truck and I get a manual mirror. My 2015 SR5 had an auto dimming mirror with garage door opener. Thanks for any help. I tried wiretapping into the camera today but nothing worked and I don’t want to fry anything so I didn’t just keep trying combinations to wiretap into on the forward recognition camera wiring harness.

Yea they all do it’s what detects the fog line and center line for lane centering and lane alerts and operates the sensor for the auto brights. It’s within the plastic housing by the rear view mirror. You can see it clear as day when looking inside at the windshield from the front of the truck. It’s on the right hand side of the rear view mirror.

It’s also where you hook up the dash can that Toyota offers.

    my "auto-dimming" mirror is bs.
Doesn't get dark enough if someone has their brights ... It gets green. My other older cars it's an easy flip and gets very dark. Idiots who design these stuff should be fired.

Frichco228 yes I’ve read every post about the wire tap but unfortunately the posts all only talk about tapping into the auto dim mirror which does not come standard in the trd sport for the sr5 trim. The sr5 trim trd sport only comes with a manual mirror so you can’t tap into power from it.

when I tried tapping into the forward recognition camera I got airbag alerts and a few other alerts so I quit trying to find the switched 12 bolt line and neutral as I don’t feel like frying the forward recognition camera that costs over $1k and basically renders the truck useless and it’s a work truck so that’s just not an option.

I wouldn’t have asked the question if any of the other posts were of any help. I don’t ask questions without doing my own research. I looked over the wiring diagrams too but there was nothing stating the switched 12 volt pin location for the forward recognition camera.

I get it there are alot of people who just ask without reading but I didn’t and I stated that in my post. Thanks for not helping and treating me like an idiot. This is why I hate forums. Nothing but add home keyboard warriors who think they are above everyone else.

I’m also not an electrician so a voltage meter isn’t an option because I don’t know shit about electrical besides the basics and using a multi meter is out of my knowledge base for anything electrical.

I won’t rely on getting an answer on these forums because it’s been asked numerous times and the same response is given even when people state they don’t face a powered rear view mirror.

it wasn’t hard to wiretap into the posted mirror on my 2015 tundra so one would think I probably wouldn’t ask this question if I had a powered rear view mirror since I already had the radar detector wiretapped into my old truck.

that’s what’s wrong with the US now everyone is ignorant and refuses to ever help when people ask. Thankfully not everyone is like that but on the online world and especially forums you get nothing but assholes who probably haven’t done shit in life and can only talk down to people they don’t ever see. Waste of time and hope that someone may help.

Lol thanks for that you brought some light to this post hahah.

Yeah auto anything auto usually is shit but I’ll tell you what I love the auto brights on my 2022 trd sport crewmax and the auto lane centering and lane assist.

Those features are bad ass and make driving much more enjoyable for me. I drive a lot. I have averaged 55,000 miles a year for the past decade for work. I already have 23k miles on this new truck and I got it in May and we worked close to home a-lot this year like way more than we normally do. I live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and basically any job we are on is at least 1-2 hours one way. Nothing is close up here and just to get supplies I have to drive 1 hr one way as the town I live in is tiny and doesn’t have any hardware stores that are worth going to.

Our employees have gotten so used to me hitting the rumble strips over the years when I had the 2010 and 2015 Tundra that its a common joke to say I’m coming whenever we hear someone hit the rumble strips on the highway and now with the 2022 Tundra having the lane centering/assist I never hit the rumble strips anymore.

FYI in Michigan we have rumble strips (grooves ground into the asphalt on the center line and fog line) to keep you alert if you drift off the road in either direction. I swear the rumble strips had magnets in them because I couldn’t drive without hitting them nonstop.

I don’t need the auto brights (as I always switched off the brights for oncoming traffic) but not having to even think about turning off the brights now is very nice and convenient.

I don’t like the auto start/stop feature though. To me it’s just something that will break over time and I’m not sold on them. My moms 2018 jeep grand Cherokee had it and it was nothing but problems with her starter. She had to have it replaced 3-4 times within 2 years. She finally smartened up and got a Toyota Highlander this year so we are a Toyota family. My sister has a highlander as well and this is her second one now. Very reliable vehicles.

I usually just lightly press on the brakes at a stop so it doesn’t activate.

We buy Toyota trucks because of their solid reliability and minimal time spent in the repair shops.

I just hope the 2022 Tundra doesn’t mess up Toyota’s reliability and reputation for their trucks.

I’m thinking of trading in this 2022 Tundra and getting the 2023 model just because of the recalls and other small issues I’ve already had with the electrical systems.

I’ll never buy a first generation model update again. I mean I love the truck but there has been more problems with this truck in 6 months than the other 4 trucks combined.

I didn’t want the 5’5” box or the 8” screen but with the chip shortages beggars can’t be choosers and we needed a new work truck as the other trucks have high miles. We need at least 3 work trucks so I had to take what I could get at the dealership at that time.

Plus getting 21-23 mpg on the highway without hauling the trailer (10-12 mpg hauling a 7k-8k pound work trailer) is a hell of a-lot better than the 14 mpg (without trailer) or 6-7 mpg with the trailers on the older trucks. I mean basically the truck has paid for itself so far with the money we have saved in gas due to the better mpg on the 2022 Tundra and the steep as hell gas prices. I’d rather have something for my money than give it to big oil. Plus who doesn’t love a new truck .

Out of the Toyota work trucks we have bought since 2010 (2010 Tundra (sold last year), 2013 Tundra, 2015 Tundra and now the 2022 Tundra) we have only had to put a little less than $10k total into actual repairs on them.

All of the trucks have also had very minimal time spent in the repair shop which is sort of a necessity.

We don’t make our employees drive their own vehicles to the job sites and we have a short outdoor working season (for 1 part of our business) in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan so we can’t really afford any downtime due to vehicles breaking down. Plus Tundras just don’t rust out like Chevy, Ford and Ram do. I mean the 2010 still looks amazing and there isn’t any rusted out panels on any of the trucks.

We haul heavy work trailers and average well over 130k miles a year with our small work fleet. The 2010 Tundra had a little less than $5k put into it for actual repairs (not including maintenance like tires, oil changes, spark plugs, etc) and that truck had over 350k miles on it when we sold it.

The 2013 Tundra just had to get a new transmission put in this year which cost just under $5k and that truck has over 310k miles on it (original transmission was faulty and replaced under warranty within the first year) and I think overall the 2013 Tundra just had a transmission issue even after the original warranty replacement around 20-30k miles. So this is technically the third transmission on the 2013 but we only had to pay for one transmission.

The 2015 Tundra has over 330k miles on it currently and the only things that have been repaired on it were the front bearings and the alternator.

Not sure how I went on this rant from your comment but I did and I was too deep into it to delete all of this.

Overall, I love Toyota trucks and the reliability of them, zero rust issues and limited repair costs and downtime from being in the repair shop are a good trade off for the shit gas mileage they used to get. Honestly they still don’t get that great of gas mileage compared to Ram or Ford but at least they are trying to get the mpg up there. I do love the twin turbo v6 though. It’s a powerhouse and I didn’t think the new motor would have had more get up and go compared to the 5.7 liter v8 but damn I’ll take this twin turbo v6 over the v8 any day. I also love the new independent rear suspension. This truck toss the work trailers so much better than the older trucks ever did. I can’t barely even tell I’m towing any of them and they aren’t light work trailers.

Actually, the Toyota OEM Dashcam for the 2022 Tundra is above the headline console where you put your sunglasses. Check out the other DashCam threads in this forum.

    Maharisc,

yes I know the power plug goes up by the sunglass holder but my wiretap isn’t long e Pugh to go that high up.

i am talking about the area where the dashcam is installed (pic included) there is a plug for the forward recognition camera for seeing the center lines and fog lines for sign assist and lane assist that I want to plug into. There is also an empty port for a plug (not sure what it is for) that I want to wiretap into.

I took the black plastic off from around the rear view mirror yesterday and tried finding the wiring diagram that shows where the switches 12 volt power line is (don’t want constant power draw to the radar detector for obvious reasons) with no success.

that is the question I am asking. I worded it wrong in my original post as I watched the dashcam install videos and read as I was hoping maybe I could get power from that area but the wiretap harness is not long enough.

There is just not any info out there for using a wiretap to get power for a radar detector when you have the pointless manual dimming rear view mirror. There is power obviously in the area I’m talking about because there is the forward recognition camera in that same spot.

When I tried plugging the wiretap into the colorcoded wires that are switched 12 volt power and ground for other devices it didn’t work at all and it threw out error codes for the airbags and lane assist and lane centering assist and other things. I didn’t want to continue just randomly trying to plug the wiretap into pins in fear of frying the forward recognition camera that costs more than $1k to replace and would make the truck unsafe to drive. It’s not an option for me to mess up a $57k truck that’s needed for work daily just to wire in a radar detector.

ive searched ten master wiring diagram found on this forum and Google and I’ve literally went through every damn page on the 3rd gen Tundra forum and read every post in regards to the dashcam and wiretap posts and there isn’t anything for wiretapping with the manual dimming rear view mirrors anywhere on this forum or Google or YouTube or anywhere. I’m not an electrician by trade so a multimeter is not an option as I don’t know how to use them and I’m not buying one for this. I figured there is plenty of smart people out there and someone has had to figured it out for tapping into the power going to the forward recognition camera but I was wrong.

And thanks for not answering my question at all. Waste of your time and mine for reading it and writing this response. I see so many assholes responding with just search this forum or here is a link to wiring it into the POWERED REARVIEW MIRROR. Instead of actually helping people out with a quick answer they give a smart ass comment just to make themselves feel better because they hate themselves and go on power trips because they have issues with their ego.

I’m just going to use the long ass cord that came with the detector and plug it into the 12 volt cigarette lighter style plug.

I just hate wires dangling in the windshield area or any area at that. I’m a bit OCD and not having a clean setup annoys the hell out of me and it just looks like shit.

I’ll probably just delete this post tomorrow as I clearly won’t get a simple answer with a picture or anything because that is just too much for some people to do this day and age. I’m glad I’m not a cocksucker that withholds info when I know the answer like so many arrogant people do now.

People are just curmudgeons on tbe internet now because it helps them get off to be the person in power online because they aren’t the boss in real life.

if I know something I gladly share it and help people out but as I’ve been clearly figuring out in the last decade people in the US just don’t do that anymore but instead play stupid ass games to make people feel stupid or try to make people feel lower than them. This is why I hate forums and never use them unless I absolutely cannot find the answer myself anywhere and that’s the case now.

I give up on having faith in people anymore though because overall most people are cocksuckers now.

I’m over generalizing obviously because there is alot of good people in the world but they tend to not voice their opinion or what they know online because they fear the repercussions from lowly keyboard warriors trying to belittle people to make themselves feel important or whatever it is that they get out of acting like that.

Please people don’t respond to this post unless it’s an answer or something that will help out with the question I asked and others have asked and gotten the same bullshit comments back.

This is where the dashcam mounts bud and then it’s wired in by the sunglass holder.

And in the area next to where the dashcam mounts there is an open port for a plug which is unknown what it’s for (probably digital rear view mirror but why would anyone pay almost $3k for it and then even more to wire the other cameras that are needed by the bed light).

but in that housing next to the dashcam there is the forward recognition camera which obviously is powered by a switched 12volt or 5 volt power line but I don’t know where it is because there isnt any info on it anywhere.
