I'm looking to get a set of 4 rainguards / visors for my Tundra 2005 DC

Im getting mixed reviews from researching whether to get the in channel ones vs the ones that stick with 3M tape.

Also wanted to know your experience on the wind noise on the freeway with either of these on.

TLDR: Any advise/insight on the in channel or external 3M tape rainguard/visor please!

    Thanks!

I have had a set with a TUNDRA decal rain visor/vent for about a month. I think they came with adhesive promoter, and 3m tape. I haven't noticed any abnormal wind noise. I expected to because they stick to the door not the channel thing.

They were a birthday gift from my parents. I'm not sure where they got them.

I have had both kinds; The in channel ones seem to be a little more low profile and I think they look better. But I had one crack and removing it was a pain in the A$$. So I removed them all and put on the ones that stick to the doors. Haven’t had an issue, they work great and no wind Noise.

Get the Weathertech in channel ones. Easy install and nothing to worry about falling off. They cut down window noise a bit as well.

Chose AVS years ago for our 2000 Highlander for no other reason than Autozone had them. Was very pleased with them and chose to continue using them on our 2004 and 2017 Highlander and Tundra. While the 2017 High were in-channel and a little more challenging to install, they've served us well for 3 yrs. As with many things, prep is key as far as cleaning the adhering area.

The in channel ones are not hard to install. I use them on all my vehicles. The first time I put them in, I thought I was going to break them but they are extremely flexible and strong.

Here is the installation video from Weathertech. Easy Peasy...

I have had both. I prefer the stick-on kind, if for no other reason than the in-channel ones seem to put strain on my window motors trying to close the glass the last inch or so. Tight fit, perhaps too tight. Mind you that wasn't on a Tundra, perhaps the issue is vehicle specific.

I have in-channel on my 2002 Sequoia and tape-on ones on my 2004 Tundra DC. I prefer the tape-on ones. Like Dog said the in-channel are a tight fit and strains the window motor closing.

Agree about the strain but that has never swayed be from continuing to buy the in-channel for all my vehicles.

In channel pros: slim, low profile, no adhesive to replace or clean up after removal, tight fit, leak proof
Stick on pros: cost compared to Weathertech, availability

I've never had wind noise with either and I have had both on 1st Gen tundras.

The in channels I had included the 3M tape. When I tried to remove them, it pulled the rubber out and was a pain to get back in. I guess I should have got the snap in kind - they DO seem to put more strain on the window motors though

I've got the in channel WeatherTech on my 04 DC I like the way they look much better than the tape on.

The windows seemed to struggle at first but have gotten much better especially after using some silicone on the rubber.

I’ve got the weather techs In my tundra, my Tacoma, my Avalon.. no issues to report. Once they hit the vents the window struggled a wee bit more, but no harm, the tacos had them since 2001

Ive had the same experience as well. After they seat themselves the first couple of times, they are all set.

Yes the in channel ones. Seen to many of the tape on ones not last long term and coming loose. On some cars they can be a tight fit. So install on a hot day. Roll up the window. And use typical wooden shims on the inside of glass to compress the outside weatherstripping a little. Let sit overnight or a little longer if a problem.
My 2003 4Runner had the auto glass down. So glass would go up but auto back down when it hit the tight spot at top. So the shims fixed the problem. Have had the weather tech ones on the 4runner since 2003. And my Tundras since 2006

I put in-channel Weathertech's on my '00 tundra when I bought it new. Never any problems, but sometimes the Riverside window rattles a bit if it is at the halfway down position.

I'll put a new set on my 2020 when the weather warms up enough for windows down driving.

Very happy with the Weathertechs. Low profile, easy to install, smoked to shade sun and blend nicely. I also installed them on my 2014 Avalon Hybrid. That was a little trickier since there were metal clips the had to be inserted in the rubber weatherstrip but fit very well and work flawlessly. I did have a question on the Avalon install and called WT and they perfectly guided me through the issue I was having with installing the rear window clips. WeatherTechs are a bit pricey but tend to think you get what you pay for. They look great IMO. Can't wait to be able to leave cracked in the summer to keep the heat down and drive while raining and still getting fresh air. Excuse the bags on the mirrors. Have some Robins in Spring that see themselves in the mirrors and start pecking and crapping.

I do wish WeatherTech would make a channel rear window visor (for Crewmax power rear window) but they didn't seem interested when I called. Weathertech window shades.jpg

Yep mine do that because they are loose. They seem to be some cheap crap from the previous owner. Now that its getting warmer I may just rip them off. I suppose you could try and apply new adhesive but that is probably more trouble than it's worth.

they will rattle eventually once the window run starts to get old. my 01 tacoma started to have them rattle after 14 years. but new window runs and its good again. The tundra is rattle free for now

which one are you going with?

I just installed my in channels and are very happy with them. Just worried a bit as I now understand what people are saying about stressing the motor. But I feel like it should stretch the weatherstrip overtime and put less stress on the window motor

Yes that is exactly what happens.
If you are concerned and want it to happen overnight. Add some wooden shims from hardware store to the channel with the window up overnight. Better for a day in the hot sun.

I've posted these before in another thread and it seems a majority of folks here are all for in-channel. I didn't want to add stress to my window motor so I opted for these low profile visors.20190409_183145.jpg 20190409_183331.jpg 20190409_183504.jpg

It is a stick on type. Removed the tape from the backside, installed new tape on the opposite side.

I did not like how much it blocked my view out of the rear window, so I marked it off and trimmed it down.
