Any members here running a Optima Red Top AGM battery? My battery is taking a deuce, and it's been replaced twice already under MFR. Warranty at O'Reilly's. I don't run a lot of things but need a reliable battery better than stock or the premium. Recently installed the MESO Map and Dome lights, VLED foot well lights and Alpharex headlights. And lights are just dimming. I also have Baja Designs on my front bumper and also run squadrons as my fog lights.

Looked into the threads here but didn't seem to find a answer specifically.

Any suggestions on how to run this Optima AGM or info is greatly appreciated please and thanks.

Edit: the battery I'm talking about taking a deuce on me is the premium start from oh, oh, oh O'Reilly's! Auto parts!

I had a red top that I threw in everything from racecars to charging RC batteries to running my forklift and in between. I killed that battery multiple times and it always came back to life and ran amazingly strong. I had it in my FJ40 as a backup battery for a trip and a guy had his battery explode from a fucked alternator so I gave him the red top to get home and he still has it and it's going good. I don't think there's anything special to do, I certainly never did, and that battery performed amazing.

Funny part is someone had returned it to O'Reilly for being "faulty" so I got it as an open box special for like $50 lol

I'm a believer in AGM batteries. I have a Northstar that is now Odyssey (merger) and I've gotta ton of lighting and aftermarket audio setup without any issues.

Is this as your auxiliary/secondary battery or as your main? I haven't been funding my truck mods as of lately to run a dual battery setup so this is only going to be a main battery and I'm new to the AGM battery scene. I've wondered if I have to switch the ground or change the positive or negative terminal wiring.

I'm all about the warranties but the reliability and quality overtakes warranty. I just don't have enough drive to keep going under warranty unless I shelled a good amount of money for the battery.

Nice, Im new to the AGM battery scene and coming from the Super Start Premium. Wanted to make sure my 2018 alternator or components in general will be sufficient to run this battery without any issues.

From what I have read, Optimas used to be really good but a few years ago they were bought out/merged/whatever and moved production to Mexico. Since then they are not worth the premium cost. But what do I know? Here in AZ the heat kills all batteries no matter what, so we only get at most 2-3 years tops no matter the brand, so at least here, warranty is the most important.

That is so old news. JC had some QC issues right after the line moved to Mexico in 2006. Clarios bought JC power division and totally modernized the production line. State of the art. I have a Clarios Red Top. No issues.

I ran a red top in my 4RUNNER for years, no problems if the truck was driven regularly. If it needs to sit a while, pop a trickle charger on it to keep it topped off.

I run yellow tops in my vehicles…have for years. They’re a few dollars more than the red tops. I have one in my current Tundra-no issues

Sheesh, I feel like I've looked but it didn't popped up for me. Great thread though! My questions has been answered.

Never had any luck with optima batteries in particular but all I run in any of my vehicles are AGM type batteries. Currently got an Advance Auto house branded AGM in the tundra after the factory lead acid took a dump on me in traffic. Had an AGM in the Tacoma before that and have an AGM in the bike currently too.

I'm on an X2 as well. No issues so far. I'm running the HKB 4 and use a battery tender once a month just to keep things in order.

Edit: To clarify I'm using an AGM as a starter in a single battery system.

I’ve had the same 6v Optima red top in my 1960 VW for about 8 or 9 years. It just sits for months sometimes when I forget to put the battery tender back on. Always has enough poop to start.

I have read that Optima quality is extremely inconsistent. You either get lucky or you don’t. I got lucky.
