Needing to change gear oil in all gear boxes except trans. Any opinions on if redline is worth the cost or not? I do tow my travel trailer a few times a year… I used it in the past on my 06 tacoma but was just curious if anyone has any opinions.

I've used Redline in ATVs, motorcycles, trucks, etc. for close to twenty years. While it's hard to say it made any appreciable difference in a truck or ATV, it has smoothed out shifting in Harley's and BMW's. Because of that, I've stuck with it.

In the end though, it's hard to make a bad choice with the quality of lubricants available today.

I use Redline diff oil in my Tundra and a few other vehicles and their manual transmission oil in one as well. Seems to work just fine.

Personally I stick to the Toyota fluid for the t-case.

I take most fluid preferences with a grain of salt. You'll always get people who prefer a type or brand, but they may drive differently than you or they may just feel like if it works it's great. I think that changing fluids timely and using a quality (not necessarily expensive) fluid is all that matters. I don't think any fluid will give a really noticeable difference outside of the old fluid vs new fluid "feelings".

You can look into some charted data comparisons for things like break down resistance, heat resistance, heat transfer, and other comparable characteristics. When you're done it may set your mind against the fluids with low marks, but for the fluids with the high marks you have to keep in mind "will my trans ever hit 1000 degrees?"

All that said, Redline has a lot of fans (and I don't meant that negatively) and was recommended to me by a trusted diff shop. I didn't buy it, but wouldn't have a problem using it if the price wasn't high. If it makes you happy to run it and its priced comparably to others, run it. As long as you aren't paying 50% too much for that purple crap.

Everybody has a different opinion on oils, I’ve run about everything, cheap junk to Mobil 1 to lucas, to redline, to royal purple, and  personally can’t tell any difference. Only time I could tell any difference is in rear diff fluid with a LSD. I suspect there are a ton of high mileage tundras running around running cheap conventional penzoil or whatever. I fall back to Mobil 1 a lot, seems like a good middle of the road price vs quality for me.

Interesting responses! I may just run Lucas products. Money isn’t too much of a factor, especially when it comes to maintaining my truck. That being said I’ve always been a big fan of Lucas products. I always would mix a quart of Lucas oil stabilizer in my 94’ S10 Blazer. I am considering running Toyota fluid in the t-case though. Thank you all for your responses! Had to throw a pic of my first vehicle that I still have after 17 years!

I partied with a VP guy from Lucas oil
In Cancun for a week at a resort one time. Seemed like a real nice guy, I would buy their oil.

I have been running Lucas in my rear diff for a few years, it has been good. I don't run their synthetic though, just the conventional.
