Hey guys, I recently just bought a used 2021 Tundra limited 4X4 Crewmax. I have a push to start ignition but I can’t start the truck via remote start with the fob….does this option come stock from the factory or do I need to have this feature installed??

Did you try pushing the lock button 3 times in a row and on the third time holding it until the lights flash?
Toyota also offers remote connect I think $80 a year and you can start it from the app on your smart phone.

I believe in 21 the key fob method was removed and the subscription to the app is required.

My 2020 does the push 3 times and hold, but from what I read, this was the last year???

EDIT - looks like I'm an idiot.... A quote from a different thread...

"My 2021 is an SR5 (with smart key) and has remote start, both triple lock method through the key fob and through the Toyota app.Jun 23, 2021"

The key Fob works on my 2023 loaner tundra but I guess it's probably still under the trial period for Toyota connect so probably not a good indicator.

I tried the lock button 3 times and got no response. I looked into the Toyota connect subscription but I wanted to make sure there isn’t just a malfunction with the truck.

I don't think anything is wrong with your truck, I do recall reading that they did make the subscription mandatory for even the key fob to work on later trucks. You can sign up for it for a month and cancel right away if you don't like it they will refund you the pro rated amount.

After I bought my truck a few weeks ago, I think I tried the 3 press method 4 times? Maybe 5? Before I got it right. You need to be a fairly quick between presses, but not too fast. And you need to hold the 3rd press down a lot longer than you think you would have to.

Yeah it’s definitely finicky. I rarely get it to start on the first try. It’s like you have to have the timing exactly right. If only there was a button on the key fob that a user could simply press once :monocle:

I’ve watched videos, tried both fobs, fast, slow, no luck…maybe replacing the key fob battery is next?

Naw... Its a 21...battery is likely fine. If the fob unlocks and locks the doors, it would start it as well.

If you can unlock and lock your truck with the FOB then it's not the battery.

Update, remote start is working via key fob but as soon as I open the driver door the truck shuts off. Anyone have this issue??

That's a safety measure. Nothing wrong with your truck, and there's no work around found aside from installing an aftermarket remote start system.

Even installing an aftermarket will not allow it to run when the door is opened unless its a key start. Push button is a no go.

Ah, that I wasn't sure about. My tundra was a key, so that's as far as I looked.

There is a member on here that was working to circumvent the shut off by essentially using a small home built computer with a program he wrote, sim card and spare key but I haven't seen if he had any success and obviously that is way more than most normal DIY people would be able to do.

Here you can compare the 20+21 push button and key start remote starts, key start states it will stay running and push button will shut off. 19 and below all had key start and will stay running.

So even installing an after market remote start the truck still shuts off when opening the doors. ?

I downsized to a Tacoma a few months ago and I don't mind the factory remote start. :anonymous:

Correct, if you have a push button start there is currently no know way to keep the engine from shutting off when the door is open, even through the aftermarket.

What a bummer! Seems like an unnecessary safety measure to me ‍♂️

Feel lucky I got the last year with an actual key. 2021 SR5, at first I was surprised it wasn’t a push button start but guess it’s Limited and up for that feature.

Or with different packages. SR5 with TRD Sport package has push button.

I also got that package too, ended up with the leather package. Never had leather seats, and then put seat covers over it because it’s too damn cold in the winter.

I didn't get the leather package but I did put leather replacement covers on and heated seats while I was at it. Makes up for the cold :)

Didn’t read all the responses, but if you have push to start, you have remote start. Even if the dealer tells you it’s not on there. Also, they didn’t remove it on the 21 or require a subscription package for it. It’s on there. I bought my 21 from dealer as a CPO and asked them if the option was included and they said no. Talked to a guy from Toyota manufacturing and he said it’s on all of them, period.

Great thread everyone, thank you. I was this many years old when I learned I could remote start with just the key fob and not the subscription. My truck is a 2020 Limited SR5 with push button start. Mine shuts off as soon as I open the door as well. It's not ideal, but just glad I now know I have it the ability to remote start.
