I have a 22 SR5 and it has remote start as long as I keep Toyota’s remote connect subscription service. Push the lock button on the key fob 3 times and hold it down on the third push. It does seem as though it takes a few seconds for it to kick in. Hope this helps.

So I’ve tried the 3 presses and it doesn’t work. Do I have to have a subscription service?

So I figured it out. Started my free trial and activated the remote start with the phone and remote. I think I’m good now, just waiting on second remote from Toyota.

I understand that if you don't renew/pay for the remote connect subscription after the trial period expires, the remote start feature goes away.

The Toyota remote start is so pathetic, especially from the fob,... inconsistent, slow, short range, etc... that I am almost certainly going to go aftermarket at some point. I want a long range 2-way fob based remote start like I put in my Tacoma way back in 2009. This Tundra setup just totally sucks by comparison.

Why not just use the app, it works fine, even has a counter on it to tell you how long it’s running etc?

I had a two way viper on my 16 that was great but the phone app works great

That's fine for a long winter morning warmup but one thing I found helpful is to do a quick remote start run in the summer whilst walking out of a grocery store or wherever. You don't need to it to run long to get the cab cool, just long enough to purge the super hot air in the ducts and vents. With a good key fob that takes literally 2 seconds at the checkout or even as I am walking out. But the app? No. Got to start the app, wait for it to sync data, then start and the time for that to actually complete varies a lot depending on the cellular and internet gods. And the Tundra key fob doesn't have the range or a way to confirm success...and seems to work for me maybe 1 out of 5 tries. It is sad.

The remote start on the Tundra is such a waste anyway, it kills the engine when you open the door and you ahev to restart it in he truck. Who ever designed it was not thinking.

I don’t know man , I just did that very thing

I was getting in line at target and simply said, hey siri, “ start the truck”

done, don’t even have to take the fob out, or mess with the app, same with lock or unlock

hey siri, lock the truck or unlock the truck, done, it’s pretty slick

Yes, but with the cloud data and cell lag issues it may or may not be running by the time you get there.

Sometimes. Here is the paraphrased dialog from my latest try. Siri, start my Toyota... "working on it"... "just a second"... "sorry, can't start your Toyota". All that took about 30 seconds. Then 15 seconds after the last Siri message it starts. LOL. This in a place with good cellular signal and I was about 100 feet away watching the truck.

make sure its locked first, thats usually the problem.

we have 5G uc here so its stupid solid and fast, maybe thats the difference. it works every time for me unless the truck isnt locked, then I have to say lock the truck first.

anyways, good luck, I was jsut trying to help and or offer a positive experience I was having.

The app is nice but after your free year trial expires it’s $15/month just to have remote start.

Truck is always locked. My old XR is still 4G LTE. If 5G has less latency issues maybe it's time for a new phone.

Yup. But if it works well, that still might make sense as opposed to a good aftermarket like Compustar which will probably cost $500 or more installed and present some risk with the installation. All in all I'd prefer the aftermarket. I had a Clifford in my Tacoma and it worked perfectly for 14 years. 2 presses on the fob start button from up to 1/4 mile away and truck was running with 2-way beep and visual confirmation. New DEI and Compustar have even more range, which really isn't necessary. I did that install myself and it was very invasive... needed to cut and splice tiny ECM and transponder wires, as well as large starter and accessory power wires. Not sure I'd want to take that on again with the Tundra and not sure I would trust a "pro" installer. I am still looking around for the wiring list for alarm/remote start for 2022+ Tundras to get a feel for the level of difficulty but not having any luck. It's not posted on the12volt.com yet. Without that you can forget about it.

    you need this then

    https://accessorides.com/products/2...t-plug-play-push-start?variant=39729896325166

I have it and love it...LOOOONG range like my old school Viper 791XV. Youre right, the range sucks on the oem fob and the app is finiky plus having it shut off when you open the door is dumb. All that is resolved with that unit. Install is as PnP as possible...gotta tap into one wire and cut another....very easy to do.

Thanks, I'll check it out to include a look at the instructions. Did you install it yourself? The finer print says "partially" plug and play. But I bet it is a lot simpler than what I did to my Tacoma, drivers seat out, steering wheel off, dashboard half disassembled. Soldering up 10g accessory wires with a micro torch. Egads.

Your Viper 791XV was the same as my Clifford RSX system, same remote and all. I loved it... except the remote ate batteries.

Do you have the directions for this? The Accessorides website doesn't have a link.

Yeah, did it myself. It says partial PnP because of the tapping and cutting of the two wires I mentioned. They also state that you need to send the module back to them but that's not necessary. They provide a login so you can update the module yourself and get it working on the spot. I guess they put that disclaimer for those not able to do it themselves? You do need a computer for that. If you've done remote starts, alarms or even a head unit swap, this will be a piece of cake.
