Remove under seat floor vents to make room for subwoofer?

Been poking around for a week or so trying to come up with the best solution for a subwoofer.

I’m in an 06 SR5 DC w4x4 so we’re all on the same page.

Easiest sub solution seems to be stick a low profile powered sub under one of the front seats. However, there’s not a whole lot of real estate due to the rear underfloor foot vents. I’m considering removing those vents to free up more space to mount a sub and possibly an amp.

Curious if anyone else has done or attempted this.

    Thanks for the response.

I guess I was not clear. I’ve been poking around on this very forum for awhile and have read all the existing threads about subs.

None have addressed my question in the threads title.

Feedback from those who have installed shallow mount free air subs in a baffle under the rear seats says it’s rattle city unless the plastic cover is cut off.

Not interested in major fabrication such as you’re doing to your tundra or major modifications to the truck in anyway.

The discontinued JL steal box in the center console is an appealing option, however the few vendors with any in stock are selling them for $900, seems a little steep.

After exploring the aforementioned options I came to the conclusion an under seat powered sub would be best easy and economically sound (pun intended) solution.

So, has anyone successfully removed the vents under the front seats of a DC?

I have not, but I did cut my flat shop vac nozzle attachment in half and used the pieces to extend the vents out under an amp, which sits on top attached by velcro. I also had to reverse a bar on the underside of the seat for clearance. Not sure if your sub would fit like that or not.

I have indeed but their removal was not intended to be permanent. Simply for another project I was doing....sound deadening.

Edit....I searched for pics I posted in the past showing they are flat plastic channels.

Best I can do for now if interested....

Thank you! That’s an interesting idea I hadn’t thought of. I’ve had the seats out when I did my deep clean and they’re super easy to remove and surprisingly light.

How difficult was it to reverse that bar?

    Thank you! That’s super helpful.

If I am interpreting that diagram correctly, by removing or cutting and blocky off those vents I will not lose air supply anywhere else. I had concerned they were plumbed into the B pillar vents.

Come to think of it, pretty sure when I was going through the jl audio stealth ox directions there was a caveat you would lose those underseat vents as I think they are plumbed into the center console.

Correct....if you do away with D in red, the other vents will simply have an increase in air-flow volume.

I guess the question I'm left with is: You mention "not interested in major modifications in any way", removing entire sections of the HVAC plumbing seems like a major modification to me?

Rattles can be dealt with quite easily, and in a number of ways. There are dozens of videos on YouTube that address rattles in creative ways.

The only difficult part is that they specifically engineered the bar so that it can't be flipped. The one end is shaped in a way that it only fits the way it was from the factory. I just took it to a bench grinder to make it work.

To each their own, but I hardly think eliminating rear under floor ventilation is a major modification. I personally don’t think anyone, let alone my passengers, will ever be the wiser.

    Furthermore, it’s easily reversible.

Dirt Deeds injectors, Addco rear sway, AEM dry flow air filter, last ever set of Stan's Try-Y headers, Borla full custom exhaust, front level, wheel spacers, and lots of electronics.
I've got an 8" 300w self contained Rockford Punch package under the front passenger seat without any modification. There is still some limited forward/backward seat base adjustment but otherwise no issues. Have a 900w amp for door speakers under the driver's seat.

I did wind up wrapping the sub with thick foam sheets meant for pillow stuffing just to stop some rattles. I can't complain about the setup at all. Lots of bass for such a little package.

It's in the other thread but I had a removable box built with a 10" Punch sub.
Pulled it out when I had 3 people in the rear seat.
Although I had a bench seat that I had 3 amps under it.

No need to cut the plastic - you just have to tighten it up so it won't rattle. I used hard foam for this, wedged in tightly -

Here’s my setup. Custom made box. Shallow mount Pioneer. Nothing special. Had problems with the sub hitting the plastic undercover so I picked up a few rubber pucks to hold it up, out of the way. Doesn’t look the best but, sounds great. Amp is under the driver’s seat. It’s forward of the floor vents and isn’t an issue.

I was trying find something that would fit under the front passenger seat but eventually changed my game plan after I couldn't settle on a shallow all-in-one amplified sub.

I bought a sturdy, carpeted 8" sealed sub for about $110 and put it in the floor behind the driver's seat. It's powered off a 5 channel class D amp in the storage area under the rear seat. It doesn't take up a lot of room, doesn't care if I pile stuff on top of it, and does a great job of filling out the low end. It also nestles nicely on top of the transmission hump in between the center cupholders and seat cushion. I'd like to add a 2nd one in series and put it in the rear passenger footwell for the sake of symmetry and improved bass response but it's not a priority since I'm pretty happy with the sound currently.

Do you usually leave it like that? Recommend down firing it.

Doh, I see the feets impressions in your carpet floor mat. Disregard. Carry on.

I appreciate the simplicity of putting a box in the back seat area, but that’s not gonna work for me. I have two kids in elementary school that I regularly drop off and pick up from school and occasionally one or two of their friends. Even if it’s just my kids I can see it easily get in the way of back packs and gear bags for after school practice. Could I get out and throw them in the bed? Sure, but it’s an inconvenience I don’t think is worth it.

The custom built enclosure with the pucks/bumpers on top looks like the best solution to me. @Baller you care to share the dims of that box? MDF?

Thanks for posting more info! You were one of the first people I thought of when I saw this post, hence the tag. :D

That truly is a nice setup for DIY/at-home. I love how you routed the edge to make things fit snugly, at a lower profile. A+ work!

Update. It’s extremely easy to remove the underseat vents and just as easy to return to stock if you so choose. Vent is held in by ONE plastic screw clip. The other end just snaps into the duct work under the dash adjacent to the center console. At least for the passenger side anyway.

After removing said vent in about 15 mins including removing the seat, I took some measurements and although it would be snug I was pretty sure this would fit:
    https://www.crutchfield.com/S-YwrxnV27v4t/p_20646HS10/Kicker-46HS10.html

    Low and behold, it fits!

Almost done wiring it up. Will report back once everything is installed and add more pictures.

So it took way longer than I would have liked, and was quite tricky to get everything dialed in on the eq and various other settings, but I’m super happy.

    HUGE IMPROVEMENT

Kicker HS10 (10” powered sub) absolutely fits if you remove the under seat vent.

Zero loss of under seat foot room for rear passenger and full functionality of the front passenger seat.

okay this gives me some actual confidence to pull the trigger getting 2 rockville USS10s to put one under each front seat (kinda balling on a budget but maybe upgrade the subs later on, don't need anything tooo crazy)

you have more info on actually taking the vents out? cause honestly i don't see the need to have them... my backseat is mostly for the dog and a 12v fridge for overland trips lol.

I would pass on the two rockvilles and spend a little more for the kicker. It will sounds way better and hit harder. I had a kenwood pancake sub that never performed up to par and finally splurged for the kicker hideaway 10” sub and the difference was night and day. I suspect the Rockville subs will leave you wanting more…..YMMV

Shoot, I'd throw some aluminum blocks on the seat to raise it a couple of inches.

Yeah I've thought about it a lot, but also I'm coming from my other car with 2 12s in it and always having them turned down 99% of the time...so like I don't really care to have too much...I got my other project cars to fuck around with bigger bass lmao...kinda just trying to get it cheap and ocd makes me need one under each seat which I can't afford the kicker...if I could afford it I'd get two JLs and get some seat jackers to make them fit lmao

I figured for the price I'd get them and see how they go worst case I end up selling them and getting something different. (Wouldn't suprise me cause I'm terrible at deciding what I'm gonna buy lmao) regardless I'll make a forum post about it when I do it.
