So in October I will be taking a short vacation from Central Illinois to Tennessee for about 5 days.

Ideally, I'd like to take my 2 dogs with me, as ill be staying in a cabin where my dogs are allowed. Usually my dogs ride in the bed of my truck, but thats too long of a drive for me to transport them without a cover on them. I have no need to purchase a topper, but I'd love to rent or borrow one for this trip. I also just dont have $1000 to spend on a new or used one.

I dont know a ton about toppers. I know the brand LEER and A.R.E., but really, I don't care.

    I have a 2010 Tundra Double Cab
    6.5' bed
Color is slate, but really, whatever.... beggers can't be choosers.

Does anyone have anything in my Iliinois vicinity, or within driving range, that would let me rent theirs? I'd gladly pay a deposit or whatever else you needed as a security measure that I'd return it.

    Thank you!

Kennels with covers would be an option. We have dogs that ride that way from Iowa to Texas and they didn't have any issues. Now temperatures are the only issue to watch for. And if your friends despise a kennel that might be a bit of a chore

Thanks for the tip! I'll look into that. Our dogs are often kenneled, so they wouldn't mind that. I just dont want them to get heat stroke or wind fatigue or whatever else could happen. I've never driven them that far.

But when I do drive them, I have a kennel for them in my bed that they love to take short trips in. Otherwise, my girl dog gets terribly car sick inside the cab. So I can't have puking on repeat for hours on end.

I'll look into a kennel cover too. Thank you!

You should just buy a Soft Topper. $800ish.

Sell it for most of what you bought it for when you get back.

You can roll up the sides for extra air flow so the doggies don't get hot in the southern states.

I love mine. I'll never have a rigid cap again.

I won't be surprised if you like yours so much that you want to keep it.

+1 on this, even perusing your local craigslist/facebook marketplace could net you a cheaper result as well. I picked up my Softopper for $150 used on FB Marketplace and wasn't sure how well i'd like it. I cant imagine not having it now, it's been that beneficial.

Another benefit is how well it stores when it's off the truck, similar to a bimini top for a boat.

    Good luck!

There are usually free shells listed on FB market too.
I have no real faith that they are what they claim they are if you try to get one but they are listed as free around here all the time.
How far from STL are you?
I can take a look around here if you want.

I really appreciate that and all the pointers!

I am only about 3 hours from STL.
I would drive there for a deal!
It'll still turn out to be cheaper than boarding the two dogs for 5 days.

I'm not on Facebook. So I have to use the wife's account to paroose. Haha, she loves that.
