In the market for a new Tundra. I am hearing Toyota is having trouble with their new engine and there have been reports of engine failures. Any truth to that?

There have been engine failures. Overall percents is debatable but still believed to be very small. Reports are that the issue responsible for the majority of failures was resolved in early 23.

If you are in the market, go get a 2024 and be happy.

We have over 4500 3rd Gen members and 42 failures. That is .9% failure rate. Does it suck for the 42 members? Yes it does and they are getting taken care of.

Here is my list of members:

    42 ÷ 4500 is not 0.009%. It's 0.9%.

4500 is actually a pretty sizeable population and 42 units is a statistically significant sample for reliability analysis. Given that we are talking about early part of the lifecycle, failure rate follows Weibull distribution instead for typical gaussian (normal) distribution. Eventually the reliability should increase following Dwayne growth curve, but 0.9% (or 9000 ppm as we prefer to use in reliability engineering analysis) failure rate is very high for such an early life cycle stage.
In early life cycle ("infant mortality") failure rate testing we would typically use 500 units populations and expect a failure rate of less than 500 ppm. Three consecutive tests of 500 units with zero failures would be considered a successful design and a "pass". If you had one failiure in the 3 consecutive 500 units, you keep repeating the tests in 500 units lots until you get 500 ppm failure rate or less with 95% confidence level (using Weibull distrubution). 42 failures out of 4500 units would be considered a total disaster, and send the engineers back to the drawing board. Even assuming that the numbers derived from the forum are not as good as controlled experiment, 9000 ppm failure rate is a total f***-up.
    Reliability engineering 101.

Do I think it's high rate for Toyota? Maybe a bit. However...it has tapered off a lot mid 2023.

Let me explain in in very simple terms. In order to meet a 500 ppm failure rate, which is considered industry standard acceptable rate, a population of 4500 units could have maximum of 2 failures at 50% confidence level. A single failure would give you about 95% confidence level that the design meets 500 ppm criteria.
Even if the sample in this group is highly biased,, the difference between 42 failures vs 2 is so big, that it is an obvious major engineering f***-up. No amount of statistical and mathematical massaging will change the fact that this engine doesn't meet even the most basic reliability engineering criteria.
Maybe the subscribers to this group are particularly unlucky and the total failure rate isn't 9000 ppm. Maybe it is 5000 or even 2000. Still, it is way higher that any reliability engineer would consider acceptable.
No matter how you look at it, this particular engine execution is a failure. Maybe it's a design problem. Maybe it's a manufacturing problem because Texas rednecks can't build this engine like their Japanese counterparts. This engine is used in Japan-made Lexus vehicles and they don't seem to have the same problems, so it could be a manufacturing / assembly issue. HopefullyToyota can figure it out. But until we have enough statistically significant data showing that MY23 and newer engines no longer have the problem, I would stay away from any Texas-built Toyota turbo V6 engine.

I haven't seen any after 3/23 either. Any after 3/23 might be due to other issues. I've seen a few posts on other media sites where hydro locking was the cause.

I thing making an assessment that an issue that depends on mileage and use to evaluate whether it was solved or not might be premature until the mileage is accumulated on the majority of test units.

Even if they believe they solved the issue, they do not know until the mileage and use has accumulated on enough units that the fix was applied to. I think its a little early yet. Maybe by the end of the year or a little longer.

I get what you are saying and agree. Just because we have 4500 members and 42 failures doesn't tell the whole story. A good portion of these "members" are one time posters. The age old saying "the squeaky wheel gets the grease" kind of thing.
From an engineering standpoint, we would need some more complete data like:

    How many failures since 2017?
Of these how many have failed due to manufacturing?
How many of these engines have been produced since 2022?
    How many total failures?
How many failures were due to manufacturing/design and how many were owner caused?

I am not a math person. But I can tell you that the Chevy Silverado and in general GM products have a higher failure rate. In 2020 I bought a brand new 2021 Silverado 5.3. Complete engine failure at 308 miles caused the engine to have to be replaced. I had so many problems with that truck almost everything had to be replaced. It took a lawyer and two and half years for GM to finally offer to buy it back, under the Michigan Lemon law. Part of the agreement was that I buy another GM product with extra money in the settlement to do so. I got a 2023 GMC Cannon and it came with oil leaks. While the dealer was test driving it they totaled it when hit from the rear end by someone who was not paying attention that all the vehicles in front of them had stopped. I am very happy with the 2023 Toyota Tundra Platinum I bought to take the failing GM products place. Just my two cents worth.

There is no way in hell I would buy a 5.3L GM with cylinder deactivation. In 2021 for a short period of time the electronics shortage caused GM to bypass this system all together. I would buy one of those.

At this point their is no way in hell I would buy another GM product. On the 2021 the problems were endless and in the first year it spent a total of 42 days in the Dealership with one problem or another.

To have fixed the problem for March ‘23 builds, they would’ve had to have figured out the cause and a solution and implement it before then. No way. 100% Toyota didn’t know what was causing this an entire year ago. I personally still don’t think they even know today. As more 23’s start hitting the 20-30k mileage I’m sure we’ll see more.

So, we are really not to sure if this issue is over. Seems to be mixed thoughts on this issue. I'm probably going to get anyway, Ill just make sure to buy the extended warranty too. Any recommendations for good dealers in SC Willing to travel to get the best deal if necessary. Tired of these dealers with their rip off pricing.
