Looking for real world advice from sequoia owners. Anything and everything on them. The use would be as my daily driver of around 50-70 miles daily between school/daycare/work/etc. Not taking overlanding (although I'd love to), not needing 4wd since I don't take my truck offroad really, but needing the suv since I'll still be using it to haul my 16' trailer when needed as well at my family. We do have a minivan that's used for the long distance family trips that has the entertainment system, but am considering getting it in this vehicle in case we start taking trips that would justify utilizing rear entertainment. Looking for info on which trims you have and why. I've considered certain trims to keep from having an obstacle to go around/over in the middle row, so most likely a 7 seater instead of the 8. I'm not going to say "ABSOLUTELY NOT" to anything since there may be things I'm not thinking of or considering. This vehicle would replace the tundra, so keep that in mind. Again, ANY and ALL advice is welcomed. Hell, drop pics if you'd like. I've dug around a bit within the sequoia builds thread, but am curious in case someone has gotten something and later realized they shouldn't have (i.e., gotten a Limited and wish they had gone with an SR5 or Platinum)

I have a 2014 Toyota Sequoia Limited and its hand down the best truck I have ever owned. It’s got 186k miles on it and the check engine light has never come on. It’s a fantastic truck that I used to haul around my son and daughter to their sporting events, zoos, cross country ....
It’s the reason I got a Tundra. Gas mileage sucks but you know that going in .
    Toyota reliability baby!

Previous mini-van owner and longtime Yota owner. The Sequoia is by the most rugged versatile family vehicle out there.

If I were you I would shop around for a Limited with second row captains chairs. That was our first choice, but we also wanted a white 4x4 that was 2018 or newer. Turns out that was like locating a real life unicorn in the wild. Ended up with a 2018 Platinum Blizzard Pearl 4x4 and love it.

Don't count out the Platinum trim. We use it to haul our 18' hybrid camper and the auto adjusting air suspension is great. If you never plan on modifying the suspension then you shouldn't have an issue. Most who are building a a trail worthy Sequoia want an SR5 or Limited because they don't have the air suspension, which limits the amount of modification you can do to the rear suspension unless you remove the air bags and weld in shock mounts. The Platinum trim also has second row captains standard w/ seat warmers, rear entertainment, and a large center console that converts into a massive table. This has become essential on long road trips for eating, playing games, etc.

Overall, it's a Toyota. Reliable, rugged, customizable, and just plain fun to drive. The transition from the mini-van (3 kids) to the Sequoia has been seamless for us. The layout is identical the vehicle is longer and offers us more storage. Oh, and it can tow.

I'm prob gonna get a new one like a 21 or even 22 depending when I buy it. Especially if it's the last one produced before the new motor gets dropped in it. I'm definitely leaning towards the limited, but not ruling out the platinum. Not planning on jacking with thr rear suspension, but maybe the front for a higher quality suspension down the road. Color....I'm kinda picky to an extent. I don't want black because I can't have a 2nd job trying to keep it clean. No white since there are so many of them out there (unless the new pearl white, I'd consider that). And prob no silver since thats a pretty common color. I did have a silver tundra before, and it did look clean almost always lol. I'd have kids going into the back constantly since I drive my kids around alot as well, so I don't want them crawling over or moving seats around. I'd rather them just go straight to the back between the 3 middle row captains chairs. Plus, a lil space between kids is usually a good thing, especially on long trips ha

We’re on our 4th sequoia. First an 08 limited. Awesome never a problem. Got a new 13 sr5 because the wife wanted a new color. After a few years she missed some of the limited amenities like leather, power folding mirrors, heated seats. Traded for a 15 sequoia limited. Great and no issues until a lady pulled out in front of her and caused an accident (not my wife’s fault). Got into a 20 pro last year for an amazing deal and it’s awesome. Has all the amenities of the limited but with a nicer suspension and appearance. Always did well with resale and only issue we ever had was a rotor warp issue on the 13. Had captains chairs in 3 of the 4 and wouldn’t go back to a bench seat ever. None of them had built in entertainment system but we had portable head rest ones for the first one and installed an audiovox dvd with wireless headphones in the 13. With all the options out there for entertainment I wouldn’t let that be a driving point. Turning radius for them is amazing given the size. The only interior I didn’t like was our 15 limited, we had an issue with the leather on the driver seat that started at 18,000 miles and the dealership refused to warranty it. Ultimately corporate got involved and gave us a $1,000 compensation.

I bought a used 2012 Platinum with relatively low miles, 88k. Super happy with the car, so much room and super comfortable for everyone. Kids love the rear seat entertainment and I removed the center console for room to get in and out of the 3rd row since the captains chairs have car seats.

Thanks man. Love it too! A while back I stopped at a local dealer and they actually had a lunar pro on the lot(rare considering our dealer usually gets shit inventory) it was pretty nice, but didn't drive it to test suspension.

I've considered getting a used one, but I'm usually one to get my vehicles and sit on them for a while and pay them off early if possible. I've kept in mind to get a platinum if the features called me to it and remove thr middle seat. Right now, I have 3 girls, 5 and under, so car seats and boosters are gonna happen for a lil while longer.

What he said! LOL there are a massive amount of cupholders! We have a 2006 sequoia, we bought it used in 2009, it has only 90k miles on it as I've had a company trucks for a while that gets most of our miles. It looks like @drobb 's beast except not as lifted, not the cool wheels and still has the running boards. It may be the best car we will ever own. That 4.7 is smooth as silk. Sure it is thirsty but in the total equation offers a low cost of ownership. So far the repair log is a stuck caliper. Maintenance wise just oil changes, brake pads all round and shocks, timing belt. In regards to towing we put 5-7k ish miles towing a 22 ft model travel trailer at 5,400 lbs loaded...it worked it hard and we had a Hensley that helped it out but it did a respectable job. Obviously the newer sequoias would be a different ball game power wise and assuming braking-wise for towing.

I’ve always thought the Sequoias were really cool. If my wife’s Yukon can make it till 2023, the plan is to get her a new gen 3 Sequoia, which I’m expecting to come with the more efficient new Tundra drivetrain.

The Sequoia follows the Tundra new generation with a new generation the next model year (2000/2001, 2007/2008, and now 2022/2023). Looking forward to that gen 3!!

My wife is in that boat as well for wanting to wait until then to get one. I agree to it too, but some matters may have changed making that not necessarily as easy. And if we wait until then, the tundra should have most of the bugs worked through so that the sequoia should be a fairly smooth roll out.

So I went to Toyota this past Friday afternoon after work and they don't get but about 1 in every couple weeks(not a huge market around us for them unfortunately for me). When I parked, I ended up going inside and talking to them. They couldn't give an offer on my truck since the prices on them change almost literally weekly. 2 sales people and 2 customers went and looked at it while talking to them inside. They told me that they're offering pretty much what NADA offers. I looked at my truck's value yesterday and it's showing it's worth about 4k over what I paid for it 4 years and 75k miles ago :eek2:

I sourced a 2013 from Texas after looking for months, the long distance purchase was a huge PITA but I could not be happier.

    Good luck!

We went from the 2012 Limited to the 2019 Platinum. There’s barely any difference at all in the interior, or the truck overall. Same stereo, seats aren’t noticeably different, etc. The only real difference other than the grill and headlights is the air suspension which has no value at all for us.
She chose the Platinum for the ventilated seats, which aren’t anything to write home about. I’d have gone with the Pro. In my opinion those seats are nicer than the Platinum ones.

As for the rest, you already know my opinion about the Sequoia. Other than it being a bit dated, it’s an outstanding truck. We put over 200k on the first one without a single mechanical failure.
The in laws are leaving for Tennessee today in our 2012. It has around 215k on the odometer and I have complete faith that they’ll make it there and back with no issues.
