I am selling my 2005 SR5 Double Cab 4WD with 131,000 miles on it. I am trying to figure out an asking price. I've already purchased my 2019 Tundra - had to travel to Portland from Seattle area to buy one; there's a severe used Tundra scarcity around here! I'm looking at comparables - a lot of them are 2WD. What is the 4WD premium?

Adding to original post: The PNW weather on the west side of the mountains is mild - not much snow or ice or SALT. I had the timing belt changed at 90K miles. Maintenance kept up. It has some cosmetic issues - dents, etc. but no accidents. Clean title. 4WD hi and lo both are perfect. It's been a farm/work truck and everyday driver. Thanks for all the advice. I will check out the "So you wanna buy..." post!

PACNW has higher pricing than anywhere else in the country from what I've seen, California is almost identical.

Really, it all boils down to whether the frame is rusty, its options, its maintenance history, whether or not you've neglected it. Like, maintenance-wise you're currently 40k miles overdue for timing belt and water pump if not already done and, that's the one single maintenance part that will brick your entire engine if it snaps, and it costs $1500-2200 to have it done properly ... so that would immediately make a knowledgable buyer turn and walk away, and some people would want to tow it away to avoid losing it on the way to the shop. But other things like regular oil changes, whether you've been lubing the drivetrain with NLGI 2 w/moly, whether or not 4WD works in both 4HI and 4LO.

    I'd catch this post - https://www.tundras.com/threads/so-you-wanna-buy-just-bought-a-1st-gen-tundra-eh.115928/

It's a long read, but it goes over what a buyer needs to know, and being armed with that as a seller will benefit you, help you find a fair price. There is pricing info, I think in the 2nd reply. But what I put up there ^^^ is ultimately what I'd be looking at.

The premium is large. 4wd will sometimes bring DOUBLE. Typically I see a clean 2005 FGT in 2wd with $150k miles around 6-7k. Same truck in 4wd will run $10-14k around here.

I’m located out west of PDX. I’ve noticed that here in the PacNW that the prices for the 1st gen 2wd it 4wd are all over the board! Like sometimes a 2wd will be advertised for way more than a comparable 4wd truck. There’s so much of a price fluctuation here (i’ve been watching the market pretty closely for about the past 1.5 years), that i have absolutely no idea of what a fair market price is for 2x or 4x.

4wd command a good bit more and disappear quickly here in almost every case. 2wd trucks sit even at low prices. At the end of the day I think the crazy asking prices are over but either way it’s only worth what someone will pay for it. A 2wd truck is worthless to me, I’ll never buy another one.

I was just searching for a bunch of different types of older suvs and trucks, I found one nut asking $22,500 for his 3rd gen t4r lol.

If you want max $$ then price high and eek it down $1k if it hasn’t sold in a week. Continue to walk it down from there starting at $20-22k. Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace are the most active places to list.

Generally speaking though, 4WD typically commands about 20-30% more $$ universally. And price will vary based on the factors I mentioned. Once a truck crosses that 200k mark, they seem to drop about 10-15% in value. And another when you hit 300k, rinse/repeat every added 100k. If the frame is rusty, value just dropped 40% or more depending how bad it is. If the frame has been treated by Toyota or tampered/refinished it’s a big red flag for buyers. Everyone prefers frame replacement by Toyota over treatment/coating, which invalidates the frame for replacement if rusty.

If you're not really in a hurry shifty's advice is solid, start high and walk it down. I live in the PNW too and even though i've had my 1GT for a few months now I'm weird and like to look on Craigslist just to see what pops up. I'd say generally I see them in the 10k -15k; for that mileage you could probably go higher. Late Spring/Summer around here is bananas, you might be able to get more if you are willing to wait. Of course, take into account all of the things others have mentioned, especially the rust (the history on my truck shows it being in the PNW its entire life, and it still has some) !

I have mostly bought and sold 2wd trucks. Brand new it is about 5k more for 4WD in the same trim. oddly enough, used market carried about the same. That said, the last two trucks I have sold with 2WDs sold for top dollar due to condition, one of which being in SD where you would assume 4WD matters. Condition matters more than drive to a lot of drivers, especially when it isnt lifted and the buyer wonders how you treated it.
