    I have a 2018 Tundra with the 5.7.
Since I bought it about 2 years ago it has had an odd down shift. It usually happens if I'm cruising around
30-45 mph and I let off the gas completely and start decelerating towards a red light and before I get to the intersection, the light turns green and no matter how gently I get back on the throttle it seems to shift pretty hard back into gear. It's always bothered me but I've read the transmissions are "clunky". Does anyone else experience anything similar?
I bought the truck with 34k mikes, and it currently has 43k miles.

I notice this too, I wouldn't say it's at an actual downshift, but what you explained getting back on the throttle (even very gently) after coasting it'll hit hard. I notice it a lot in slow freeway traffic.

I think you're right, it's not really a downshift more like on/off the throttle. And yes it's happened not me on a slow freeway too.

Is it a sudden clunk? If so, it’s from the differential and caused by backlash in the gear. Not much you can do about it honestly other than accelerating more gently initially.

I had this in my 2016 and right now in my 2020. I think it’s normal. I think it’s the computer slow to shift correctly

It's normal. Literally every truck I've ever had does the same thing under the same conditions; some do it a bit more readily than others.

thanks for the input. Every truck I've owned would do this on occasion but not as often as the Tundra, however this is my first Toyota. Ive just been trying to convince myself that the Tundra transmissions are really heavy duty, robust and made of big heavy internals. Lol

You have nothing to worry about. It’s all software. Transmission failures on a tundra are extremely rare. While it can be a annoying for sure just listen and learn the way she operates.

Every once in a while I'd get a driveline clunk...basically it was the truck reminding me to grease my u-joints. Went away thereafter until the next reminder.

I will certainly grease everything up. Is there a specific type grease I should be using?
