I apologize in advance for probably asking really dumb questions here.

So the S mode. I've searched around trying to find info on it and haven't really succeeded. What in the bloody heck is this for? Should I be using this when off road in muddy conditions and keeping it in low gear? Should I be using it while towing etc? I assume it doesn't stand for standard because there's no clutch for shifting up and down? So that tells me that I should be able to shift up and down gears while driving on the highway without destroying my transmission (I'm terrified of trying this lol)

Again sorry for what is probably really dumb questions but I like to learn and ask questions so thanks for your time!

It’s generally used for towing. It is sequential shifting. You don’t want to drive over 5th gear while towing heavy loads, so using this shifter prevents the transmission from going into 5th and 6th.

It’s for whatever you want! All it does is limit your transmission to the gear you selected. It always starts off at 4. It will work like a regular automatic transmission but limit itself to whatever gear you selected. I like to use it out on the highway if I’m going up a long grade and the transmission is hunting to stay in the proper gear. That way I’m not heating up the clutches in the transmission. It’s also nice for going downhill so you can use the brakes less. Really nothing scary about it.

    Also for towing.

Ok so I can shift between gears while the truck is moving and not damage anything right. Obviously switching it to first while going 65 is a terrible idea.

Yes. You can upshift and downshift while normal driving. But holding lower gears will cause excessive heat to build up

Ide say anything over 3-4K lbs. you’ll feel it if it’s hunting gears while cruising at speed.

It won’t let you. It will beep at you lol. As soon as you slow down enough it will go into it though LOL. Try it next time you go for a drive go directly to S. Drive as normal. If you put it in sixth it will act exactly the way it does in D.

Slaps it in “Sport” mode and doesn’t understand why it starts him in 4th? Obviously this guy has no clue what he’s talking about when he thinks it’s a “Sport” mode in a 6000lb truck lol.

It’s actually Sequential shifting mode and it’s intended purpose is for heavy towing when you do not want the transmission going into 5th and 6th which are less than 1:1 gears and will cause excessive heat in the clutch and fluid from gear hunting

So I guess the guy in the video doesn't understand that the feature is not to turn your truck into a manual but instead meant to keep you from going over the gear you are currently have it set in.

Alright then I took my post down
    I stand corrected!

Are u telling me I should only use when towing?

I came from an 7.3 F250 with 37’s before my Tundra- I thought using “S” mode was like/ same as using the overdrive “off” button around town on that truck?
It keep tranny from excessive shifting in and out of overdrive around town!

No, you can use it whenever you want. It’s just like you said, a mode for you to select what final gear you want the transmission to shift too. You can use it around town. But it’s sequential, which by definition means “forming or following in a logical order or sequence” since you can only go up or down one gear from where you select, speed and rpm dependent. Guys with bigger tires use it for the same purpose since you lose gear with the bigger tires and the transmission wants to start hunting on the freeway. I like to use it when I’m in heavy traffic. That way if I need to get in and out or merge I can basically keep it in the powerband.

So besides using tow mode I should be using the S mode to haul a 5000-5500 boat?

I am in "S" mode and TOW/HAUL 99% of the time I drive my Tundra. It is excellent for managing the pace in stop-and-go traffic and is very effective in using engine braking when descending a slight downgrade. One can downshift when the cruise is on (especially during adaptive cruise when the traffic slows a bit and you are in 6th at about 1,500 rpm, downshift to 5th and bring the revs up to quiet things down in the cab). I typically drive looking way ahead and when I see the traffic slowing up ahead, I begin downshifting to slow down. Driving in this manner in traffic, I hardly use my brakes unless something changes more rapidly (not very common on my commute).

I can't remember the last time I used "D" mode.

I have actually never really used this even when towing the Jeep. Maybe I should but I haven't found that need yet.

I have been trying S mode on my commute and have a question. Is driving in S mode 6th gear equivalent to driving in D?
