    Hello,
New Tundra owner love the truck. 2018 SR5 TRD.
I have a question regarding safety sense.
With the radar on and the PCS sensitivity at max I have never seen the brake now and audible alert despite some close calls with vehicles in front of me.
I got to thinking the thing isn't working.
I put a huge box in the middle of my street and drove straight at it...crashed into it.
No flashing on dash to brake, no auto braking.
Truck is at dealership now as it is a CPO under warranty.
They seem to not be able to prove to me it is working.
Last call from them they seemed to want to blame the bull bar I installed, I'm thinking that's not the problem as I checked with others before putting it on.
No codes no indication something else is wrong.
Have you guys seen the flash and heard an audible beep or had the brakes automatically stop before a crash?
    Any help much appreciated.

Was safety sense working before you installed the Bull Bar?

I always thought that if the sensor had it's view obstructed (bull bar, bumper, snow, whatever) it gives an alert, fault ,that pops up on the dash. And if it faults like that, TSS functions will not work, such as adaptive cruise.

And easy way to check some function of the system is if your adaptive cruise works. If it does, then the sensor and system is functional in that regard. I can't help you on the auto braking, crash avoidance part, just not sure how to test that function and there may be other pieces of the puzzle regarding that part of TSS.

I did some reading up on this a while back and it is my understanding that the radar cannot pick up cardboard. Probably for the best as I wouldn't want my truck slamming on the brakes if there's a cardboard box in the road.

I have never had it engage the brakes, but I have had the warning, I think twice, on my truck. On both times, it happened when the car in front of me was slowing down to turn and I did not slow down, seeing that the vehicle would be out of the way by the time I got there. I get a brief warning and a beep. I have had it activate just once on my GS350, but never on my Highlander.

    Hey Everyone thanks for input....

Yes adaptive cruise control works perfect.

There is no alerts or faults or codes and that was my thought also if it was blocked by bull bar that would definitely happen.

It is not off in fact it turns on by default every time

I tried at 5mph and 20mph no activation what so ever

The craziest thing is it seems to me as if Toyota has no way to test this themselves.

They downloaded info from the system some kind of feedback still no answer on that.

They have had my truck for 1 week tomorrow.

Prove to me it works and we are done here.

The TSS only work above a certain mph. I wanna say 30-35+. Also as far as I am aware the tundra doesn’t auto break for you. It’s just a warning. It might break on the higher trim. Read the manual. My wife was reading hers for the NX and it has the TSS info on how it works. I also wonder if it breaks on the new tundra? I know that Toyota installed an old TSS on the 3rd gen and not the latest TSS.

Whatever this forum told me to do
    This

    Can confirm

Big red warning in center dash - no braking

Mine works below 30mph. I’ve had it go off as slow as ~10mph. Followed a slow car that was turning like he was driving thru molasses.

Yeah I just read the link I posted and it does work as slow as 7mph and up to 85. I also have never had it break for me. I think it has breaked for me in the NX. It has definitely breaked for me on a previous Acura, wow is all I said after it happened.

Cover that big box with tin foil then send us a picture of what remains after that bullbar destroys it.

Yes I was going to say that about the assist. My 2020 that I had wouldn’t brake on its own but I remember a couple of close calls when not paying attention. The truck would beep and flash and when I panicked braked, the brakes felt different like the truck was helping. I think that’s the best you’ll get.

While I certainly understand your concern OP, gotta admit I'm a bit jealous. IMO the sensor on my 2018 is waaay to sensitive. It's really annoying when your truck gives its unsolicited opinion on your driving.

Thankfully I've never had it apply the brakes for me. That's probably an unsettling feeling. I've only had the warning, which is startling enough. :D

My 2019 has beeped at me a couple times as I approached a car that was turning in front of me slower than expected. I cant say its applied the brakes for me though.

I briefly had a 2015 Grand Cherokee, it had the collision sensor. Some large highway signs have radar in them because they will shut off if there is no traffic. Somehow those would interfere with the collision warning system on the Grand Cherokee and on two separate occasions it slammed on the brakes for a solid second with absolutely nobody around while I was going close to 75-80 mph. Luckily it was a dry road and a warm day both times...

FYI, according to my manual, it does brake for you. Page 260:
